S.C. Acclimatisation Society.

a meeting of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held at the Anglers' Club Room, Teinuka, on Thursday afternoon. Present Messrs E. Richardson, jnr., (president in the chair), M. J. Knubley, T. Palliser, W. G. Aspinall, C. E. Hassell, and E. Cutten. Apologies for nonatteudance were received from Messrs Mendelson, McQueen, Langdon, and Twigg. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read From the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, asking the best way to secure and remove some young trout from Teinuka streams, as they understood this society woulJ give tlieni some.—The secretary, by instruction, had replied that the Canterbury Society's ranger would be shown the best places and assisted by this society's head ranger. From the Hon. Hall-Jones, in connection with the regulations for netting lakes. Outward correspondence was read in this connection, and it was resolved that Air ! Aspinall and the secretary write to the Minister of Marine, also to the Hon. J. M. Twoiney, M.L.C., and F. R. Flatman, M.H.R., asking them to confer with T. Duncan, Esq., M.H.R., the delegate of the Waitaki Society, with the view of obtaining a definite settlement of this question. It was pointed out that the Minister appeared to have overlooked the fact that the lake boundaries had been gazetted since December, 1397. From the Treasury, acknowledging receipt of certified balance-sheet. From the N.Z. Railway Department, offering facilities for the ranger travelling with fish for liberation. From Mr W» Stevenson, hon. ranger, reporting on Mackenzie sanctuaries. From MrDrummond-Sharpe, Woodbury, reporting on release of rainbow trout, and asking for permission to net fish likely to be left in pools, in order to remove them to other quarters.—The permission asked for had been given. From Mr C. E. Hassell, asking for copy of camp regulations.—Supplied by return. From the Waiamte Society, stating its inability to contribute towards cost of restocking Pareora river, but expressing willingness to meet this society if there is an adjustment of licenses. —Received. From Mr Cullman making enquiry as to his position as a hut holder, and his liability for rent, also as to whether the council have accepted him as a life member He stated that on April 25 he had remitted 15s to complete his membership subscription, and did not notice it recorded in last balance-sheet. The secretary's reply to Mr Cullman was read and the chairman was asked to write officially and point out to Mr Cullman that the balance-sheet of 1893 was closed on April 30th, and that his name duly appeared there and in the secretary's books as a member. An application from the Geraldine ranger for a net was referred to the ohairman to deal with. PAREORA. Mr Palliser reported upon having shifted a good many trout in the Pareora river since the death of the ranger ; also, as to repairs to net. The position of rangershiD at Pareora was discussed, and it was agreed to leave fresh appointments to the Timaru committee, a small amount extra to be granted so that the wcrk may be divided. ranger's report. The Temuka ranger's report was received. In connection therewith it was resolved that ho be authorised to have the fish-stop in canal drain removed at once if damage is being done to adjoining land. The report gave encouraging accounts of the accumulation of ducks on Milford lagoon. It was resolved to vote the head ranger a bonus of £5 as some compensation for losses in connection with a bicycle, etc., but an application for an increase of salary could not be entertained. An accident to the ranger was reported upon, and the chairman was asked to make enquiry as to the advisability of the council insuring its employees. SHOOTING SEASON. The extension of the shooting season to 31st July was unfavourably commented upon, as advice of it came so late that ducks had already started to pair. A letter from the Otago Society asked the council to support a measure having for its object the definite fixing of dates for opening and closing the shooting season throughout the South Island.—The council cordially endorsed the proposal. OPIHI CAMP. Mr Hassell referred to the regulations affecting the Opihi camp reserve, and, after a conversational discussion, gavo notice of motion that that the rules in connection therewith be amended, It was understood

that tho Timaru hut owners would submit recommendations and proposal.*. MEMBKUS. Oa tho motion of Mi- Pall iser, Mr James S. Gibson, of Timaru, was elected a life j member of the society. ' The secretary was instructed to write to several members who have paid one aiicual I subscription and ask if they desire to continue members, or will become life members, also to two gentlemen who were proposed as members prior to the amalgamation of the societies. Several accounts were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
