THE SCHOOL TREAT. The annual school treat iu connection with the above school was held in the schoolgrounds yesterday. The weather, after the muggy dull weather we have been experiencing lately, was glorious, and consequently the attendance was large, so much so that it was with difficulty that all could be accommodated in the schoolroom for the prize-giving. The proceedings commenced at 1 o’clock with the childrens’ dinner, and alter justice had been done to the good things provided by old and young, Mr F. R. Fiatman, M.H.R., and Mrs Fiatman presented the prizes and certificates won during the year. After the distribution of prizes the assemblage adjourned to the sohoolgrquud, where football, tennis, twos-and-threes, ring, and all manner of outside games were indulged in. The committeemen and their wives and friends worked heartily together for the enjoyment of the young people. At night a most enjoyable and successful dance was held in the schoolroom, the M.C. and musicians being residents in the locality. Mr Fiatman, before the presentation of the prizes, complimented tbe committee on the good attendance of well-dressed boys and girls. He was especially glad to see among the prizes several for attendance, showing that special attention bad been given to that feature. He enlarged upon the benefits regular attendance gave both children and teachers. Too many parents were apt to say that Johnny must go and pick up “ spuds,” and Mary must stay and milk tho cows, and consequently, the children, just at the age when education most benefited them, missed many valuable opportunities. He observed that he had heard on good authority that the good attendance certificates in South Canterbury was exhausted, and this showed that tho attendance on the whole was good. Nine good attendance certificates would we awarded shortly. Four of these were for boys who had not missed a single day, and five for those who bad missed fewer than five half days. AVith these few remarks, as the children were more eager for play thau listening to speeches, he proceeded with the distribution of prizes as follows :—Dux of school, A. Henderson.
