ACCIDENTS, OFFENCES, ETC.
The sum of £lB9 was stolen from the safe at the Wellington hospital last week. The safe contained £25(3, the balance being in gold and silver, but the thieves evidently overlooked the latter. The money had been lodged in the safe to pay wages at the end of the mouth, and when the steward wont to get it on Friday ho found that £lB9 in notes was missing. The safe had not been broken open and there is no clue to the thief. A scaffolding at Mr Herbert Haynes’ new building, Princes Street, Dunedin, gave way on Monday morning, throwing three workmen to the ground, a distance of IGft. One named Kirkwood was badly cut about the head, and reudered unconscious and died in the hospital. Cole had four ribs broken. Johnson had his left foot badly injured. At Timaru on Tuesday a boy named James Auld pleaded guilty to stealing a watch and chain aud a shilling, the property of Mary Wilson, on Monday, aud was fined 40s, and 5s costs, the Bench deciding to give him another chance. The evidence showed that Miss Wilson is a servant at Mr J. W. White’s, and the boy went with his master (a carpenter) to effect some repairs in the house. The girl left the watch aud chaiu hanging ou a nail in the wall of her room, aud some money in a pocket of one of her dresses, also hanging up in the room. The boy saw his opportunity aud committed the theft. The post office at Coromandel was broken open by burglars on Monday night, but the safe, in which were the cash, stamp q and registered letters, resisted their efforts to open it. Packets of letters were torn open, but it is not known whether any valuables were found in them. Mr Crossey, licensee of the Terminus Hotel at Wellington, has issued a writ for libel claiming £5Ol as damages against Mr Crabb, a temperance lecturer, for alleged slanderousstatomentsin an address on Monday. At Waimato the residence of Mrs Thomas was broken into while the family were at Christchurch last Sunday evening, and the homo ransacked. The thieves wore apparently searching for money, but several small articles were taken.
