ROAD BOARD ELECTIONS.

TEMUKA. The Road Board election ye tsrday excited comparatively little interest at Temuka, but at VVaitohi, Winchester, and Orton the polling was fairly heavy. The election resulted in the return of Messrs J. Talbot and B. R. Macdonald. Mr J. Airay, the defeated candidate, scored within two of Mr Macdonald. Details of the polling will bo found in our advertising columns. GERALDINE. The election of two members to fill the vacancies on the Geraldine Road Board, caused by the retirement of Messrs F. R. Flatman and K. Brophy, took place yesterday, when, owing to it being sale day, there was a fair amount of interest taken in the election, a good number of ratepayers polling at the central booth. At 7 o’clock last night the poll was declared as under by Mr W. Shiers, Returning Officer, the two loading candidates being declared duly elected

Mr Barker was not present. Mr K. Brophy thanked the electors for having placed him so high up on tho poll, although he had not been favored with the top position, a place ho had held on several occasions. He had done his best for tho ratepayers in the past and would do so in the future. (Applause.) Mr A. Kelman thanked tho ratepayers for having run him up so high on the poll. He did not expect to be placed so far up. In concluding, he said his services were always at the pleasure of the ratepayers, and any good he could do the country ho would do. (Hear, hear, and applause.) Mr Wreathall sincerely thanked tho ratepayers for not electing him. (Laughter), It looked very much like sour grapes, but ho felt it was certainly better for him to look after his own business thm to be taking part in public affairs. What tho board wanted at present was a member with a little backbone who would speak his mind on the board, and ho hoped tho new members would seo that they did not override the overseer when ho was carrying out his duties in dealing with contractors. (Hoar, hear, and applause.) If they appoint a man for such a position as overseer ho was entitled to the confidence and support of tho men who rule over him for the time being. Ho (Mr Wreathall) had not canvassed for himself, but he had worked in the interest of the successful candidate, Mr Barker, and he felt absolutely certain that that gentleman, although an untried man, would work for the interest of the ratepayers. (Applause.) Mr E. Murphy also returned thanks to tho electors and moved a vote of thanks to the returning officer.
