RANGITATA NOTES.
A splendid rain fell on Saturday night, and continued until about 7 a.m. on Sunday. The ground was thoroughly saturated, and pools of water filled every available hollow. Its effects upon the crops and pastures are already noticeable, and their backwardness, which was a matter of no little anxiety to the farmer, is beginning to disappear. The trees in the orchards look profitably gay, and the vegetable gardens give promise of a good time coming. The weather up to time of writing continues' cold, and portends more rain. The residents of Ealing intend to dissipate their ennui during the summer months by the formation of a tennis club. To raise funds for this purpose they intend holding a social at an early date, aud it is hoped that many friends from Rangitata will cross the bridge to lend a helping hand. Since the opening of the fishing season there has been nothing to record in connection with the Rangitata. A few anglers have visited the river, but their luck has not been phenomenal, The Star of the South Hotel has lately been under the painter’s brush, aud is now in harmony with all its surroundings, Its genial proprietor will no doubt be glad to accommodate a few guests during the fishing season, aud to conduct them to “ the home of the large fish.”
