THE CEMETERY DISPUTE.

As the subject of the cemetery dispute on a receut Sunday has attracted considerable attention, a member of the staff of the Press waited on Bishop Grimes to ascertain what were the facts concerning the matter. His Lordship most courteously granted an interview, and said—" Prior to my departure for Timaru the son and daughter of the deceased saw me with regard to the funeral. They wished for it to take place on the Monday, but Sunday was incidentally mentioned. I said 'lf you have it on Sunday you will not be able to have mass said in the church. If you. arrange for Monday mass can be aaid at 9.30 a.m.' After some further conversation the man said that he thought that 0 a.m. on Monday would be the best time, and it was so arranged. I lefi for Timaru, having first arranged with Father Galerne to take the muss on Monday morning. Whilst in Timaru I received a ♦elograru from Father Galerne stating he had seeu from an advertisement iu the paper that the funeral was to take place on the Sunday, but hs,d received no intimation from the friends. None of them evor communicated with Father Galerne, and the statement that they telegraphed urgently to me is untrue. Father Galerne informed me that ho would abid'i by tho arrangement entered into by tho relatives of the deceased with me, that the fuueral should bo on Monday. Th"se are the facta of tho case. I knew nothing beyond what was contained in Father Gi'lerue's telegram, that he had ueoJ> an advertisement fixing the funeral; for the Sunday, but that no <juo of the relatives comuiuu'catou; with him."
