In connection with the destruction by fire of the Te Auto refreshment rooms at Napier, the police have obtained evidence which points to arson. A boy named Tracay has been arrested for theft of whiskey, taken from the refreshment rooms before the fire occurred. The premises of Gawu, tobacconist, George Street, Dunedin, have beeu gutted by fire. The stock is insured iu the Standard for £GO, but the insurance on the building is not yet ascertained. A sensation is reported from Lawrence. Loo Choy entered a house in the Chinese camp, where his European wife was, aud shot her, also Mrs Sing Lee aud Miss M'Cauley. He was secretary to the Napier Chamber of Commerce, the Hawke's Bay Free Association, aud Caledonian Society and was much liked. He leaves a wife and several children. At the inquest a verdict of temporary insanity wa,s returned. No motive was shown for self-destruction. Mrs Sydney Charles Waters, wife of a wharf laborer at Timaru, dropped dead in her home at 3 o'clock on Thursday afternoon.
