Held Over. —Our leading article and conclusion of our report of the Rev. Father Lemannent des Chesuais' fifth lecture on Religion are unavoidably held over. Deceased Wipe's Sister.—The Dunedin Presbytery, by nine votes to eight, expressed disapproval of marriage with a deceased wife's sister, Rangitata Station.—"A Grand Social" to wind up the session of the Rangitata Debating Society will be held in the Rangitata Station schoolroom to-morrow evening. Loss ov a Racehorse.—The friends of Mr Wm. Deßenzy, of Winchester, will be sorry to hear that he lost that honest little racehorse, The Arbiter, on Tuesday last, from inflammation. Public Meeting at Mount Peel.—A public meeting will be held at the Mount Peel Road office on October 18th, to consider the proposal to stop certain roads running through portions of Mr Tripp's property. New Zealand Shipping Company.—The annual meeting of shareholders of the New Zealand Shipping Company was held in London on October Ist. After fully providing for depreciation the directors recommend the payment of a dividend at the ra'e of 4 per cent, per annum. Earthquakes.—A telegram from New Plymouth on Tuesday says:— Since Saturday there have been several sharp shocks of earthquake, besides a number of tremors. Since last night up to 9.38 this morning, no less than five shakes have been felt, one at 4.25 being rather a heavy one, making houses creak for a couple of seconds.

The WifiATHEB. —Oa Monday and Tuesday nights last rather severe frosts were felt throughout the district. Young lambß must have felt the cold nights intensely, and early potatoes showing above the gronnd must have been hipped. Early on Wednesday the ground was quite white with frost, and on Tuesday morning ice could be found in water buckets. Temuka Puesbyteeian Church.—The annual gathering in connection with the Temuka Presbyterian Church will take place in the Temuka Volunteer Hall this evening. As last year, the gathering will take the form of a converazione, tea being on the tables at 6.30. The choir will give a number of choice musical selections, and npeeches will also be delivered. A large attendance is hoped for and expected. Fi.Ji News. —The Taupo and Upola have arrived at Auckland from Fiji with cargoes of raw sugar. Stud Horse.—There arrived in Temuka in charge of the well-known Mr Joseph Mahoney, the very line Clydesdale entire horse BloomfieLl, the property of Mr James Little, of Allandale, Hawarden, North Canterbury. Bloomfield is a bay horse, with black and white points, and is the winner of five first prizes and one second prize at Timaru, Ashburton, Rangiora, and Chriatchurch. He has all the appearances of a pure Clydesdale, being well Bet up in every respect. His advertisement appears elsewhere, and his very long pedigree can -be obtained from Mr Mahoney. Woodbury School Committee.—The monthly meeting of this committee was held on September 28th. Present—Messrs H. F. Brown (chairman), J. H. Dean, J. Webb, T. Squire, and A. E. Riches. Correspondence was read from the Board of Education, informing the committee that £2 had been paid into the Bank of New South Wales to their account, being a special grant; aiso the eighteenth report on education. From the Traffic Manuger, scale of excursion cheap fares for exhibition in Chriatchurch. The attendance for the month was satisfactory. The average for boys was 45, and for girls 37 ; total 82. The roll number was—Boys 52, girls 45; total 07. One boy and one girl had been admitted. An account for £1 for trimming school fences was passed for payment. Tho proceeds received from the concert were considered very satisfactory, and reflected great credit upon the managing body. Mr Dean, the committee thought, was deserving of special thanks for the indefatigable zeal with which he carried out his arduous duties. Mr Webb agreed to supply the school with li cords of wood Mr Dean reported having visited the school ground, and said the work for the month had been faithfully carried out. Mr Squire kindly consented to act as visitor for the ensuiuor month. This being all the business the meeting rose. They have on viefr at the shop a very neat rustic cart, which fully bears out their reputation of turning out a good article, and anyone in want of a firstclass vehicle of aDy kind would do well to give them a visit.
