" The Chairman and Commissioners, " Gentlemen, —The past mouth has been exceptionally dry, and proportionaly severe in wear on the metalled streets, especially where live stock and traction engines travel most. There have been no fresh contracts under way, but Contract 60, consisting of formation of four chains of Eweu road, metalling same, and tilling gully across Cass Street, near the river has been completed, I carefully gauged the same prior to tilling, and computed material carted from the same, pegging out the width of the formation required, although the contractor has I filled other holes outside the said line, which have not been computed. Iu accordance with resolution at last meeting, the pipe culvert across Thomas Street at the junction with Ewen road has been carried out by the surfaceman, including a good coating of shingboii top of covering | to pipes. The surfaceman's work has been principally confined to the water tables, he has also made some considarable clearings of deposits on sides of Main South Road, where mostly required, and carted the same to the gully in Godley St., forming a foothpath through the gully. There aie a few jobs authorised by the board not yet carried out. I have had the well iu the sump in Vino street cleaned out by the nightman, as it was getting oll'ensive. 1 fouud that the drainage from the Church of England Vicarage was being discharged into the water tables in Vine Stroot. I have written to the churchwarden with the view of getting it seeu to. There are two places especially noticeable where asphalt requires repairing, viz., north of Mr Henry's residence, which he offerod to do iu March last, and some patches opposite the Royal Hotel, either of which may cause an accident on a dark night. 1 wish to draw ■ the Board's attention to the Fire Engine shed, as the doors are carelessly left open, I On Monday last, with the prevailing high winds it was only a chance that the back doors were not slammed on? their hinges. 1 communicated with the secre tary with the view of lindiug out who was responsible, but he troated it lightly, as a matter of no consequence. —I have, etc., " E.
