TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Temuka Road Board was held on Tuesday last. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), Coira, Parke, and Snell. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £76 19s Id were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From Mr Dorward, Rangitata, offering to form water race at his place at Is 3d per chain.—Contract let to Mr Dorward. From Mr Wm. Quirke, asking to have his name put on the roll in respect of the Orari Hotel. From Mr A. Brown, consenting to the same. —Attended to. From Messrs Sharplin & Co., in reply to clerk, stating that they would supply black-birch decking at the same price as last year, viz., 17s 6d per 100 feet at Temnka. From the same, stating that the board's order was being pushed od, and they would write when to expect delivery. From Mr John Murray, chairman of the Orari water race committee, stating that thev could not let water down the race Mr Dorward was making, as the season was too dry. From the same, stating that the committee would not object to water going down Mr Dorward's race if the season proved suitable.—The chairman stated that it would not affect the board. Mr Dorwaid could go on with the work, and would then have to get permission to let water into it.

From Mr Rolleston, pointing out the dangerous way in which branch races were being carried across the roads, no proper crossings being made.—The chairman stated that Mr Angland had got permission from the county council some time ago to make the race complained of, but had only lately done it. He thought it should come before the board before any more races were allowed.—lt was resolved that the county council be informed of the complaint made by Mr Rolleston, with a request that in all cases wheu branch races were wanted across the roads in the Temuka Road District they be referred to the board.

From the clerk of the Timaru Harbor Board, acknowledging receipt of the board's cheque for £346 5a Id. From the Arowhenua Town Board, in reply to a letter from the overseer re Mr Oldfield's application for a culvert at the corner of Swamp road, enclosing resolution passed by the Arowhenua Town Board—that they thought thu outlet sufficient.—The clerk to write expressing regret that the town board did uot see their way clear to accept the terms offered by the board in providing half the I cost of culvert; also pointing out that, ! the road being in their jurisdiction, they should do what was necessary.—Nothing further to be done at present by the board in respect of culvert. From the Government auditor, enclosing amount of fee for auditing the board's books, £2.—To be paid. From the Auditor-General, enclosing balance-sheet of the board. overseer's ruport. The overseer's report was read as followß : " To the Chairman. " I have the honor to report for the paßt month as follows : "Tenders hare been invited for contracts No. 25, forming part of road running from Main South road to Kangitata Railway Station, and No. 29, forming about 20 chains of road at Epworth.—Contracts in haud : The contractor for forming part of road runniug from Badham's to Rangitata has commenced this work, and the contractor for No. 28, deepening drain on Rolleston's road, is proceeding with this job. Contract 22, forming road near Mr Rolleston's has uot yet been commenced.— During the month shiugle repairs have been done to Winchester and Beach road, and to Middle Swamp Road. A bridge near Mr Moore's, Waitohi, has had the sills, girders, and decking replaced. A footbridge over the Raupo Creek on the same road has had fresh girders and deckiug put on it. The remainder of the day work done during the month consists of spreading shingle, breaking stones, repairs to fords, and other small j obs. The girders of a bridge near Mr Burke's, at Milford, ,-ire a good deal decayed. This is a trussed bridge of 48-feet span and will be expansive to repair. As, however, traction engines can nearly always cross the ford alongside, I would suggest that danger notices be put up, and then with temporary repairs (that have already been done), it will carry ordinary traffic for this season. --As auihorised at last meeting I have arranged with Messrs Sharpliu & Co. to supply five or six huudred feet of black bircli decking, delivered on trucks at Temuka, at the same rate as their last contract price. I expect this timber to haud in a short time.—Re road at Audrewville : There are about ten chains of this road that would require to be formed and shingled. As a good deal of tilling will be required on this road the cost will greatly depend on the width of formation. 1 consider if formed half a chaiu wide it would meet the requirements of this place for some years. I estimate the cost of forming this length at £—; and the cost of shingling at £—. —Tho board's accounts have been audited, and the balance-sheet certified and returned.—l hnve, etc., " F. Aitc.nsß, " Ov rseer." Bridge at Mr Burke's, Milfor.l : The suggestion of the overseer approved of. Road at Andrewville : The board will expend £l2 in improving the road if the parties interested dedicate the same for public use.

The overseer stated that now would be a good time to carry out his recommendation re shingling roads at Milford.—lt was resolved to call for tenders for the same. An application was made by the Caledonian Society to bo allowed to got some clay from some of the board's roads on the Waitoii to put on their track in the park. —The board left it in the hands of the overseer. TENDERS. Tenders were opened and dealt with as follows : Joutract No. 25.—Forming road at llangitata: P. O'Mara, £O2; J. Harris, £3B ; J. Fifield, £37 ; Wm. Ledgorwood it Sons, £33; T.
