FOOTBALL.
A match was played in Timaru on Saturday between teams representing the Temuka and Timaru Public Schools. The match begau about twelve o'clock in the Athletic Grounds, which were, howover, in a bad state for fast play. During the first spoil the flue kic'nug of the Timaru backs placed Temuka on the defensive, but, although several times the play was perilously near the goal-line of the latter, the watchfulness of their backs, and especially of W. Grant, prevented any score. Gradually indeed the long kicks of Grant and Roddick, assisted by the smart followiug up of tho forwards, and especially of Phillips and McCaskill, shifted the play to the centre of the field, where it remained until half time was called :no score having been made. Immediately qn resuming play, through a run by W. Grant, ant} through Bome smart dribbling rushes, in which Blyth and D. Grant were conspicuous, tho Temuka boys found themselves within a yard of the Timaru goal lino, and here was clearly seen the cause of their failure—a want of skill in heeling out and in passing. The Timaru backs, among whom i}oys and Jonas showe-1 up well, again relieved their Bide, and by toaio Hinart passiug aad kicking moved down tho an< * wero P revo, ltoll rrom so ,rin» only by the .-tivity of Grant and Roddick.
