CHITRAL.

Calcutta, April 18. Colonel Kelly had a sharp brush with the enemy on the road to Chitral. His casualties numbered twenty. Captain Baird was killed in a sortie from Chitral. The Government have decided to make a treaty with Umra Khan, but its terms will be kept secret until they are accepted. The second son of the Ameer of Afghanistan is now passing through India on his his way to England, instead of Habibulla Khan, the heir-apparent. Miankalai was occupied after 3000 of the enemy had been dispersed, and the road is now clear to Dir. Sheraf Zul is opposing the relief of Dr Robertson, the British agent in Chitral. The Second and Third Brigades have closed the Paujkora river in the vicinity of Maniyai, the enemy fleeing at their approach to Malakai country. The Indian Government have offered Umra Khan an asylum in India. April 20. It is reported that Umra Khan has fled to Asmar in Bajour. Resistance is now limited to the Chitrals who are opposing Colonel Kelly’s advance. The Third Brigade crossed the Jambatai Pass and expect to relieve Chitral on Saturday next. Thd passage of the Jumkad has been tried by troops, who suffered terrible privation. is three marches distant. News has been received that that the Chitral garrison was sorely pressed on the 16th, the enemy’s mines being carried within ten yards of the forts.

General Low has ordered Colonel Gateacre on reaching Dir to advance with 500 men at all hazards. The Highlanders are following with supplies. It is reported that the only pass leading to Chitral is impassable for troops, owing to snow. Colonel Kelly is meeting with many obstacles in his march to the relief of Chitral, consequently only slow progress is being made. Uu the 17th Chritrul was said to be still safe.
