VICTORIAN POLITICS.

Melbourne, Jan. 11. In the Legislative Assembly the Premier explained that, after fully considering what had happened, and believing it to be the result of a misunderstanding by some members without intention or combination to defeat the Government, and that a change in the ministry would be disastrous at the present time, he had decided to proceed with business. Mr Turner added that if he had consulted his personal feelings only, he would have resigned. By the casting vote of the Chairman of Committees the payment of members was reduced to £240. The Premier then moved the second reading of the Bill to reduce the salary of future Governors to £7OOO, but an amendment was earned making it £SOOO. The salaries of future judges were also reduced by £6OO. In the Legislative. Council an amendment, postponing the second reading of the Land and Income Tax Bill for six months, was carried, the Hon. H. Cuthbert, the representative of the Government, being the only dissentient. The Council adjourned amid cheers. Jan. 12. The Cabinet have considered the rejection of the Land Tax Bill, and it is believed that the Government, for the present, will abandon the proposals contained therein and cast about among the many proposals made by members of both Houses for a suitable scheme for balancing the national ledger. The Income Tax Bill will probably be recommitted with a slightly increased scale, and further efforts in the direction of retrenchment will be made.
