A fourth is billetted in lodging bouses, the remainder is quartered in the Agricultural Hall, and provided with rough bedding and rugs. On Thursday the Mayor showed the chiefs the sights of the city. A Promotion. The Waimate Times says : —“ Mr George Hazleton, who has been messenger at the Waimate postoffice for nearly five years, has been promoted to the position of letter-carrier at Geraldine, and left by last evening’s train to take up his new duties. Previous to his departure the post-office staff presented him with a small souvenir in the shape of a gold pin. Though only filling the post of messenger patiently waiting for a promotion—young Hazelton has made good use of his opportunities, and while we have the postmaster’s assurance that he could perform many important duties outside his limited sphere of messenger, we can add our testimony that he is a very capable telegraphist, the “ copy ” of the press messages he has taken for us when relieving the telegraphist when on holiday being very excellent copy indeed. Very few messengers could be trusted to take the telegraphist’s position, and perform his duties for several weeks at a stretch, and, while congratulating Mr Hazelton on his promotion, we hope he will speedily be raised to a higher position in the service, for which his abilities well qualify him.” The Case op Charlotte Chambers. — At a meeting of the new Auckland Charitable Aid Board Charlotte Chambers’ case came up. The report of the House Committee and the evidence were referred to the new' board for its consideration and decision- The chairman moved—” That the explanation of Dr McGill be deemed satisfactory.” Mr Gordon moved, as an amendment-—*’ That inasmuch as the hon. medical staff claim to be wholly responsible for all cases brought to the hospital for medical treatment, and as they have justified the action of Dr McGill in refusing admission to Charlotte Chambers, the hoard place? the responsibility of such refusal upon the lion- staff.” The amendment was lost, and the prigiual motion „ fl 'Tied.
