December 27'h, JSomo of the goodß known to havo been i:i the otore, and identified by Air Bennett, were found with the natives* Other Maoris are suspected, and efforts are being made to arrost them* Henry Sbvoi'iio, schoolmaster at the HaVolook BtibiU'bnn echool, committed suicide on Sunday afternoon. He _ laid down, placed a gun in position* pulled the trisrgor with his left foot, and .that himself between the eyes. lie was 45 years of age, and had been under medical treatment a few days for excessive drinking. A boy named Atkinson fell down a | shaft of the Hau-Hau, Hokitika. When recovered it was found that his head was very much knocked about, it is thought ' tjlitt fre lias mo ciiuuco of recovery.
A man's skeleton was found on Sunday in the scrub at Henderson, 11 miles from Auckland, with a bullet hole in the forehead. A revolver with one barrel discharged was near the body. The other barrels were loaded. Nine cartridges were in the pockets of the clothes on the bones, also about £l4. There are no means of identification, and no man is reported as missing.—A later telegram says :—" A second search of the body led to the discovery Of a secret pocket on the clothing containing a certificate of deposit for £6O in the name of Neal Jansen in an Australian co-operative company, 111 Elizabeth Btreet, Sydney, dated December Ist, 1893. At the inquest the jury returned an open verdict.'' Horace Talbot, a labourer, was killed in the bushrat Fortrose, Otago, on Saturday; through a tree falling on him. He was 43 years of age. Mrs Gibbons, a keeper of refreshment roomß, at Lyttelton, died suddenly on Monday night. She complained of pains in the heart all day, went to bed at the usual time, was heard at 11.30 p.m. to come downstairs to get a drink, appeared to return to her bedroom, but next morning her Bon found her lying dead in the sitting-room, through which she had to pass to reach her bedroom. On the counter was a glass aud half a bottle of ginger ale. She apparently died quietly, as her son heard no disturbance. She was a sister to Mr H. B. Allwright, Postmaster at Lyttleton, and a prominent member of the Good Templar lodge. She leaves a husband and Beveral children, some grown up. Eberhardt Kufuer and Richard Dobßon were committed for trial at Dunedin on Tuesday on a charge of having maliciously stabbed Charles Ashton at South Dunedin on Christmas Eve. An old man named William Strach*n, over 60 years of age, was found hanging dead in. an outhouse at his residence, Hopper street, Wellington, on Tuesday morning. He was a steady sober man, but had been much depressed owing to money matters.
