SOUTH RANGITATA SCHOOL.

The annual picnic in connection with the above school, which was fixed for Friday last and which promised to be most successful, was completely spoiled by the inclemency of the weather. A steady down-pour set in at early dawn, and lasted till about 2 p.m., greatly to the disappointment of all concerned. The weather, however, then showed signs of clearing, and a little over half the scholars and a few friendß put in an appearance. The children were put through a programme of songs, recitations, etc., by their teacher, and the Hon. W. Rolleston distributed the prizes. During his remarks he said it gave him great pleasure to be present to hear the children sing and to see their work. He made special mention of the exercise-book that took first prize at the Temuka Floral and Horticultural Society's Show, remarking that in all his experience he had never witnessed anything better. The children, after partakiDg of a good tea, were dismissed, and told that the picnic would be held on Monday. Accordingly they all assembled in the schoolground, and spent a most enjoyable day in games, racing, etc. Miss Ford and Miss Rolleston kindly acted as judges for sewing, and Miss Donn and Miss Boas for singing. The thanks of the committee are due to these ladies, to the Hon. W. Rolleston, and to all those who gave special prizes. The weather continued fine, with the result that the schoolroom was just comfortably filled for the social. The Oran river being in high flood, visitors from the otherside were prevented from attending, otherwise the schoolroom would have been crowded. The floor was in good order, the music (violin, accordeon and piano) all that could be desired, and the catering, which was entrusted to Mr J. McOasklll, could not be surpassed. The mußio was Bupplied by Messrs Porward and Cadwallader (violin) and Taylor Bros, (accordeon) . The special feature of the evening was the singing of "Afton Water" and " Yep, Sir," by Miss Donn, of Timaru.
