FRANCE AND SIAM.
London, August 30. The Times, Pall Mall Gazette, and other newspapers, demand that the British Government shall take steps to prevent France proclaiming a protectorate over Siam. The Manchester Chamber of Commerce have made a protest to Lord Rose bery, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, against French action in Siam. Paris, August 29. The French Government threaten to send gunboats to Bangkok again, unless France is granted coutrol of public works in the Province of Battambong. August 30. Paris newspapers are assuming a bellicose tone towards England in connection with Siam. Calcutta, August 30. It is believed that France is seeking to drive Siam to overt action as an excuse for proclaiming a protectorate over the country. Bangkok, August 29. The French are erecting earthworks at Chantabun. The trade of Bangkok is still unsettled. Singapore, August 30. Commercial men have appealed to Lord Rosbery to prevent the stoppage of trade with Bangkok. They urge that the French demand if persisted in will inevitably result in a protectorate over Siam.
