GAPES'S VALLEY SCHOOL.

A concert in aid of the funds of the above school was held on Tuesday evening, Mr A. B. Amyes being in the chair. The concert was to have started at 8 o'clock, but for some reason or other the people did not turn up till over half-au-hour after that time, and by then the schoolroom was soon well filled. Miss Oxby, the schoolmistress, and other ladies in the district, had done something in the way way of decorating, and the crosses and wreaths of flowers round the room gave it a very pleasing effect. Miss Andrews commenced the programme with a pianoforte solo, and was succeeded by Mr Burn, of Kakahu, with the song "The Romany Lass." Miss Maggie Morrison got a hearty encore for " The Song that reached my Heart," and Mr G. Lovegrovo was loudly applauded for " They all love Jack." Mr J. Hall sang " The Sailor Boy," with good taste, and Miss Andrews gave an excellent rendering of " Come Buy My Pretty Flowers." Mr Dalton sang "My Bonnie Yorkshire Lass" with great vigor, and in response to an encore gave " Dreamland Faces." Mr Herdman, in splendid voice, sang " Afton Water," and in reply to a wellearned encore gave " Killarney," and this closed the first part of the programme. The last half of the programme was also opened by Miss Andrews, with a pianoforte overture, and the gem of the evening came nexb in the song " Come to Me," by Mr ilerdtu.in's little daughter, a child about f-.ur or fire years of age. The child sung wonderfully well, and sustained her part with the tenor just as knowingly as a grown-up person. " The Three Jol'y Smiths," by Mr Burn, was well receive-, and, being redemanded, he sang " Clementine." Miss Maggie Morrison again excelled in " Killarney is a pretty place," and Mr G. Lovegrove, for the comic song " My Grandfather's Moke," had to couce back and sing " Swinging in the Lane.'' Mr J. Hall followed with another of his sea songs," Rolling Home," and Miss Andrews got an encore for " Needles and Pins," and sang " Boy Blue." " Gathering up the Shells by the Seashore" was Mr Dalton's next, and Mr Herdman gave fine expression to " I Seek for Thee in every Flower." "God Save the Queen" closed the programme, and the room was then cleared \ for dancing. The dance was a very- 3tte- i cessful one, a large number of oonr>' 03 being present.
