RANGITATA SOUTH SCHOOL.

The annual picnic in connection with the above school, held in the schoolground on Thursday last, proved to be one of the most succeasful aud enjoyable tha school has ever had. The weather being all that could be desired, there was a very good attendance of parents, children, and friends. The children assembled in the schoolroom about _ 1 p.m., and were regaled with a substantial dinner, after which the following programme was proceeded with : Song, children ; violin solo, Mary Cadwallader ; duet, Agneß Taylor and Fanny Cadwallader ; song, children ; pianoforte solo, Alice Airay ; song, children ; song, Miss M. Taylor; song, four girls; recitation, R. Kelly ; song, children. The children were accompanied on the organ by Miss E. Taylor. Shortly after 3 o'clock the prizes were distributed by the chairman, Mr D. Taylor. The books were a choice lot obtained from the stock of Messrs P. W. Hutton & Co., Timaru, and reflected much credit on Mrs Taylor and Miss Irwin, who had the task of choosing them. One thing noticeable was the number of special prizes that were given, showing what a great interest the residents take iu their school. The thanks of the commissioners are due to the following persons who gave one or more special prizes : —Rangitata—Messrs H. Waller, T. Jones, H. Hearn, J. Airay, and T. Taylor, Mesdames Rolleston, Taylor, McClelland, and Minnis, Misses Ford, Rolleston, and Irwin ; Timaru— Messrs Priest & Holdgate, P. W. Hutton & Co., Kemohan McCahon & Co., R. Irwin, Wm. Toshach, and A. Irwin. Their thanks are also due to the Misses Ford and Rolleston, who kindly judged the sewing. On the walls of the schoolroom were exhibited specimens of writing, drawing, painting, mapping, and engrossing, which gave it a pretty appearance. In the afternoon the races were carried out under the supervision of the master, with Mr D. Taylor as starter, and both boys and girls enjoyed their several race 3 immensely. Much praise is due to Mesdames Taylor, Cadwallader, and Mason, and to the Misses Taylor and Cadwallader, who did their best to make the picnic pass off successfully. In the evening a social and dance were held, and there was a good attendance. Had the advertisement of the social not been inadvertently omitted in Tuesday's paper the attendance no doubt would have been much larger. One special feature at those socials is the excellent music supplied for the dances by Messrs W. Cadwallader (violin), and D. and T. Taylor (accordeons). It speaks well to the credit of these young men that they willingly come forward on these occasions and offer their services gratis in aid of tha school. During the evening songs were rendered by "Messrs Hawke3 ***'' Irwin and Miss Meredith,. Th» ' o 'n ow iuw is the prize list: —■ • °
