CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday there were fair entries of stock. Fat Sheep—There was a fair supply of fat sheep in the yards. The demand for the better classes of sheep was good, and prices were firm at late quotations. Halfbred wethers made 15s 4d to 16s 4d; crossbred wethers 15s 8d to 17s fid crossbred -wethers and maiden ewes 13s 6d to 15s 4d, crossbred ewes 11s lOd to 14s 6d, merino ewes 10a 3d to 13s 6d, merino ewes 5s 6d to 9s.

Fat Lambs —There was a poor demand for fat lambs and a portion of the moderate entry was passed. Best pens made from lls to 12s 3d; others from 9s 6d to 10s 6d.

Store Sheep—There was again a large entry of store sheep, but the demand was slightly easier. Crossbred ewes made from 10s 4d to 15s, two-tooth crossbred ewes lls 6d to 14s 3d, aged crossbred ewes 5s to 7s sd, two-tooth crossbred wethers lls lid, crossbred lambs 6s 8d to 9s 7d, merino ewes 2s 5d to 6s 3d, merino wethers 7s 3d to 7s 6d. Rams from 1£ guineas to 3J guineas. Fat Cattle—The small entry of medium quality beef met with a good demand at late quotations, if anything being slightly firmer. Heifers made from £5 to £(i 10s; cows £4 12s fid to £7 7 s fid; steers £4lss to £7lss.

Store Cattle—There was a large entry of store and dairy cattle, but the demand was somewhat weak, yearlings sold from 30s to 37s fid, two-year-olds £3 7s to £3 15s, store cows £3 to £4 2s fid. Dairy cows brought various figures up to £lO 10s. Pigs—There was a large entry of pigs and prices showed a slight decline ; stores made from 7s to 20s fid, porkers 21s to 26s fid, baconers 28s fid to 15s.

The Press gives the following approximate values ; —Prime crossbred mutton to 2f d per lb, factory weights, skins, and fat included ; prime fat lambs 3£d to 3Jd per lb, factory weights, skins, and fat included ; best beef 19s fid to 21s per 1001 b ; baconers and porkers 3|d to 4d per lb. DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat—Prime tuscan and velvet, 2s 6d to 2s 9d; a really extra good sample would fetch 2s lOd; new wheat is now enquired after; demand quiet for old stocks; fowls’ wheat, good whole wheat up to 2s 2d j other sorts, Is 9d to 2s, Barley—Chevalier, 3s 3d to 8s 9d; Cape, 2s fid to 2s 9d. Oats—Prime short feed and milling, Is 9d to Is lid; medium qualities, ls7dtolsßd; demand good, 2s has been got for good shipping parcels. New season’s rye corn to hand, 28 0d to Bs.

Potatoes—Dervvents, £2 los to £3, and are coming forward more plentL fully. Pigs—Good demand at ‘id for good quality and suitable sizes. Hams, 8d; roll bacon, fid.

Chaff—ln better supply; prime well cut, 67s fid to 60s; other qualities from 40s upwards. Butter—Demand quiet j nominally, 74d to Bd.

Cheese —Akaroa,4d to 4£d; factory, 4fd, large sizes. Grass Seeds—Ryegrass, 2s to 2s fid ; machined up to 3s. The demand for old pasture machined is good up to 4s ; cocksfoot, to 4d.

Sheepskins —On Tuesday moderate catalogues were cleared under brisk competition at following prices : —Green butchers’—pelts from JsGd to 2s 4d, do do lambs’ from Is lOd to 2s 7d; dry skins—pelts from 9d to 2s 3d, do lambs’ 9d to 2s 4d, do merino full-woolled up to 4s 8d do crossbred do os 9d.

Hides—Although prices in the local market show no alteration, trade both here and at Home is very depressed, and probably lower prices will have yet to be accepted. Quotations are : Prime heavy, 2-Jd to 3d ; medium 2d to 2£d ; light, lid to 1 ; inferior and bulls. Id to Ifd; calfskins, 6d to Is 6d. Tallow is in brisk demand, and sales are effected immediately on arrival. Prime rendered sells at 20s to 21s (id ; good, 13s to 19s ; medium, 15s to 17s; inferior, 13s to 14s Gd ; rough fat, 10s to J 3s Gd. The bankers are asking Lord Ripon to present a petition to the Cabinet requesting the Government to veto the Banking Bill passed in South Australia. They rely mainly on a cardinal flaw which makes the Bill retrospective. It is said that £20,000 is involved in South Australia alone if the measure receives the Royal assent, and fears are expressed that similar Bills will be passed by the other colonies. Sir J. 0. Bray, Agent-General for South Australia, thinks the appeal will be unsuccessful. March 8. The imports last month showed a decrease of £5,120,000, and the exports of £2,235,000. ■ Washington, March 8. The American Government are negotiating with the Messrs Rothschild for a large loan in gold at 3 per cent. It is feared that the deficit will amount to £6,000,000.
