Messrs Turnbull, Martin, and Co., are about to start a monthly line of steamers to New Zealand. They are building two fast 10,01)0 ton boats for the frozen meat trade.

Zanzibar, March 7.

The French gunboat La Bourbonaise was wrecked off the coast of Madagascar, and twenty-three of her crew were drowned.

Seyid Ali Sin Said, the Sultan, died yesterday from dropsy. 250 of the crew of H.M.S. Philomel were sent ashore to guard the palace. The Transvaal has been devastated by a destructive storm. The damage is estimated at £IOO,OOO. The mines were flooded, and farm houses round Johannesburg were demolished. Many persona were drowned.

The drought in Riverina has broken up. Heavy thunderstorms are general throughout tho colony. T n the case Carnopsky v. New Zealand Insurance Company, tho full Court granted the company a new trial on the ground that plaintiff had not given details of the damage as required by the policy. In the original action the plaintiff recovered from the company. The Council, by 23 to 20, declined to recommit the Electoral Bill, with a view to reconsider and expunge the " vote for thrift" clause.
