IMPERIAL POLITICS.
London, Feb. 27.
A caucus of the Conservative party has determined to obstruct the Government Bill.
In reply to Sir R. Temple, M.P. for Kingston, who enquired what steps were being taken to import Indians into Australia, Mr R. B. Buxton, Under-Secretary for the Coh'iiies, >-aid the colonies must decide the matter themselves. In the Bouse of Lords Lord Onslow asked for a return showing the Colonial Bills which have been vetoed, and naming the principles in them which were rejed 0.-1 but afterwards legalisd. A promise was giyen that that the return would be furnished. in the House of Commons Sir H. Meysey Thompson, member for Handsworth, moved a resolution in favor of bimetallism. Mr E. 13. Beckett, member for Whitby, moved a negative amendment which was carried by 229 to 148. Mr Gladstone, who took part in the debate, said the Government had no scheme for remedying the divergence in the value of gold and silver. Mr Balfour, Mr Goschon, and Sir Henry James voted with the minority while Mr Chamberlain, Lord R. Churchill, and the members of the anti-Parnellite section supported the amendment.
At a meeting of 15,000 citizens at Belfastit was resolved to re-ist H ome Rule if the Bill was passed. Great enthusiasm was shown, the audience singing the National Anthem.
The Irish Constabulary have been informed that they they will be liberally pensioned in the event of Homo Rule being carried. The Archbishop of Canterbury recommends the reading of a special collect for the 5 th, 1 Gtli, or 22nd Sun day after Trinity, in view of Home Rule, but refuses a special prayer. Large meetings are being organised against the Suspension Bill in Wales. A difference has arisen among members in the front Opposition bench in the House of Commons, owing to jealousy of Lord Randolph Churchill. Ottawa, March 1. The Canadian Orangemen are preparing arms for shipment to Ulster.
