NEW ZEALAND AVOOL SALES,

The following statement, furnished by the Loan and Mercantile Agency Oompany, shows the progress of JSow Zealand

Total 91,809 74,985 CHRISTCHURCH RAM FAIR. Thursday’s ram fair was the largest and best attended ever held at Christchurch. The catalogue comprised 072 lots, many of which were subdivided into five and more. Selling proceeded from 10.80 a.m. till after 8 p.m., when several of the lots remained unsold, owing to it being too dark. Southdowns ranged from 81 guineas to 6 guineas, Lincoln two-tootha from guineas to 4 guineas. Stud rams sold well, one of Mr P. C. Threlkeld’s bringing 80 guineas, one of Mr Charles Withell’s 80 guineas, others from 0 guineas to 10 guineas, only a few Homuey Marsh, from 4 guineas to 5-J- guineas. The largest number of English Leicesbers ever offered met with an active sale. Flock rams, two-tooth and four-tooth, sold up to 7| guineas, at which price a line of 70 from Mr K. Kellaud, Timaru, were cleared. The Hoon Hay stud rams all sold at from 5 guineas to 11 guineas, Mr Threlkeld’s up to 15 guineas, Mr Joseph Haydon’s 8 guineas. Special two-tootha were bought for Cherriton, New South Wales, at 50 guineas, 25 guineas, and 10 guineas each. Flock Border Leieesters realised from 4 guineas to guineas, all meeting with a ready sale. Some stud sheep brought up to 16 £ guineas. Of the merinos hardly any sold. For Shropshires there was very active demand. K elson Bros. Hawke’s Hay prize two-tootha realised 8G guineas, 27 guineas, 16 guineas, to 11£ guineas. It was the most eager competition of the sale. CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday the entry of sheep was very large. Fat Sheep—There was a medium entry of fat sheep, and good quality commanded satisfactory values, and several lines of the best sheep realised the highest prices since shearing. Crossbred ewes 11s 9d to 12s lOd, and 13s Gd to 15s 9d, crossbred wethers and maiden ewes 14s Id to 16s Id, halfbred ewes 14s, do wethers 15s 4d to 16s 3d ; merino wethers, 9s Id to 13s 3d ; ewes, 4s 5d to 6s lOd. Store Sheep—Crossbred wethers sold at 13s to 13s lOd, crossbred ewes 8s 7d to 10s 6d, and 11s 9d to 14s 6d, halfbred ewes 14s and 15s, merino ewes 4s Id to 5s lid, and a large line at 7s to 7s 6d. A large proportion of the entry of stores was lambs, which sold from 7s to 9s 3d. The sale of store sheep was marked with a good demand for all useful lines of sheep, but inferior were neglected. Fat Lambs—Fat lambs were again easy in price and sold from 9s 9d to 11s, and 12s to 13s 9d.

Fat Cattle —A small entry of fat cattle sold at a rise on late values. Steers made £5 2s 6d to £B, heifers £5 to £7 7a 6d, and cows £5 10a to £7 sa.

Dairy Cattle—Dairy cows and springers sold at £4 10s to £6, and £7 15s to £lO ss, the demand not being so keen as of late. Eighteen-months-old stock realised 42s to 61s, three year-old steers £5 18s and £5 19s 6d, calves 295, dry cows £2 13s to £5 Bs.

Pigs— Pigs sold readily at current rates, stores realising 10s 3d to 19s, porkers 20s to 30s 6d, bacouers 34s to 70s.

The Press gives the following as approximate values : —Prime crossbred mutton 2gd to 2fd per lb, factory weights, skins, and fat included ; prime fat lambs 3|d to 4d per lb, factory weight, skins, and fat included; best beef, 19s 6d to 21s per 1001 b; baconers 4|d, and porkers 4£d per lb. DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday ; Wheat—Prime tuscan and velvet, 2s Gd to 2s 9d; a really extra good sample would fetch 2s lOd; new wheat is now enquired after; demand quiet for old stocks; fou ls’ wheat, good whole wheat up to 2s 2d ; other sorts. Barley—Chevalier, os 3d to 3s Gd ; Cape, 2s Gd to 2s 9d. Oats —Prime short feed and milling, Is Dd to Is lUd; medium qualities, Is fd to Is Sd : demand good. JSew season’s rye corn to hand, 2s 9d to 3s.

Potatoes .are now in demand; derwents ju-l to £4 us.

Bides - The market is steady but without any improvement in values. Quotations : —Heavy, good-conditioned, properly-Hayed hides, 2d to 2H ; extra heavy, 2§d to 3d ; medium, lid to Ijd ; inferior to medium, Id to 1-Jd per lb.

Tallow—Well-rendered mutton is in good demand—worth 23s to 24s Gd—but none offering; medium to good, 19s to 22s ; inferior to medium, 14s Gd to 18s Gd. Hough fat is also in excellent demand and commanding high prices, best fresh caul fetching 14s to 14s Gd, inferior to,medium and good 11s to 13s Gd per cwt.

DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS,

At the Burnside Market on Wednesday the following business was transacted :

Fat Cattle.— 19G head yarded, not more than half of which could be callea good killing beef ; the rest comprised aged cows and three parts fat steers. These were mostly taken up by graziers. Prices were lower than those obtaining last week. Best bullocks brought £7 10a to £9 ; medium to good, £G 2s Gd to £7 2s Gd ; light weights, £5 5s to £6 ; best cows, £G 2s Gd to £7 2s Gd ; medium, £5 to £5 17s 9d ; light weights. £3 7s 6d to £4 15s. Fat Sheep—37o merino wethers and 174 G crossbreds yarded, the greater portion being medium to good ewes. Competition all through through the sales, lacked

spirit, resulting in prices not reaching last week’s by Gd to 9d per head. Best crosssbred wethers brought 13s to 15s—one pen 15s Gd ; ordinary 11a to 12s 9d ; best do ewes 12s 9d to 14s 3d; liglii weights and ordinary quality, 10s to 11s 9d ; merino wethers, 8s to 12s. Lambs —Only 93 penned, all of which fetched good prices ranging from 9s to 13s Gd.

Pigs —l2O were penned. The whole met with.good attention, suckers fetching 11s Gd to 13s ; slips, 14s to 16s ; stores, 18 s to 21s ; porkers, 24s to 31s ; bacouers, 3Gs to 48s. MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. London, February 2G. Tallow, medium mutton, 32s Gd ; beef, 32s Gd.

The English wheat market is steady, the Continental dull, and the American unchanged. Australian cargoes of wheat, new crop, early shipment, are offered at 3s IJd.

One thousand tons of Australian butter v, ill arrive next week. Danish butter is is quoted at 120 s.

Feb. 28, Bank of Ireland stock is at £292. March 1.

The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kindom is 3,284,000 quarters, and for the Continent 712,000 quarters. Bank of New Zealand shares, new issue, £B. The money market is declining, owing to a plentiful supply in the open market. Dunedin lamb, ex Elderslie, is selling at G£d per lb, and Melbourne lamb by the same vessel at 4d. The wool market is firm.

At a meeting of the Australian Agricultural and Coal Company, the chairman stated that the financial position in New South Wales had killed enterprise. The local hanks and financial societies held £43,000,000 of deposits.

Bank of Australasia shares have fallen £2 in a few days. The Financial Times asks why the dividend is delayed. March 2.

The Australian and New Zealand Mortgage Company have eeclared a dividend of 7 per cent., and carried forward £2OOO.
