Wells Bros, take a large and wel equipped circus and managerie down from San Francisco to the colonies by the Monowai next month. The principal ironworks in Cumberland district have been suspended for some time past, and the workmen'are in great distress. Fully 6000 men are thrown out of work, and a large number have earned nothing for a year. The wrought-iron nail makers of Worcester and Staffordshire districts have struck against the proposed reduction of wages. The strike includes 3,000 men, and may eventually affect other trades. Mr Andrew Carnegie, the multi-mil-lionaire of Pennsylvania, laid the founda-tion-stone of a public library at Peterhead Aberdeeushire, Scotland, on'August 9th. He had previously given £IOOO towards the library. The London Chronicle, commenting on the pauper question, says that it behoves European statesmen not to delay considering what they will do when America?, refuses to help them to solve their social problems by reducing the numbers of their discontented classes. Messrs Dillon and O'Brien appeared in the House of Commons on August 4th, for the first time in many months. They were heartily welcomed by all the Irish representatives. Early on the morning of August 7 one of the residents of Whitechapel, an old woman named Wolff, was seized by an unknown man, who cut her throat and stabbed her repeatedly in the body. The police, as usual, were unable to find the murderer who disappeared. The woman was taken to a hospital, and after a time she recovered sufficiently to tell of the attack made upon her. She is a German, and unlike the other women murdered and mutilated in Whitechapel, was not in the company of the iren who attacked her, but was passing along the street when the assassin sprang upon her. One man was taken into custody on suspicion, but the evidence against him was weak and unimportant. At Leeds, on August Bth, a balloonist named Higgins was killed, and Miss Devoy, who accompanied him in the ascent, narrowly escaped. The couple intended to give a trapeze, performance while ascending, and afterwards to descend by means of a parachute. In ascending the balloon was caught by a current of air and was blown sideways, striking the telegraph poles. Miss Devoy dropped from the bar unhurt, but Higgins, at a greater height, was swept off and received injuries from the fall which were almost instantly fatal. The wealthy Maharajah of Mysore, proposes to visit England towards the latter part of the year if certain learned priests decide that he does not imperil his caste by "crossing the black water." The Bishop of Exeter is going to Japan very shortly on a visit to his son who is Bishop of the Anglician missionaries in' that country. The Dore gallery in London is advertised for sale.

The United States is the objective point of netrly all the Russian Jews. It has been discovered that 200 poor children, under the care of a matron, were sent over from Liverpool to New York. Immigration Commision from the United States have gone to Europe to investigate the system. It is believed that the inquiry will result in the appointment of an American inspector at all the leading English ports. The Wesleyan Conference assembled in London considering the Dilke case, adopted a resolution protesting against the introduction into public life of men convicted of flagrant immorality. ' Marie Gordon Raymond, an actress, the divorced wife of John T. Raymond, the American comedian, died in London under an operation for tumor in the throat.
