BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.
Un Tuesday evening last the Rev. v V. Gillies, of Timaro, addressed a meeting ia the Presbyterian Church, Geraldine, on the working of the above society, the object of the promoters of the meeting being to form a branch of the society at Geraldine. There was a representative gathering, many people coming’ from the country. An apology for unavoidable absence was received from the Rev, W. Wood, who w><B absent at Temuka. Dr Fish was voted to the chair, and tbe meeting was opened with praise and prayer. Dr Fish explained the objects of the gathering, and introduced tbe Rev. W. Gillies, who was received with applause. The rev, gentleman said the meeting had been held with the view to enlisting their sympathies in the work of the society, and to get a branch formed at Geraldine. The subject of his address was the state of religion in Europe, and the work done by the society. Mr Gillies then went on to give a most interesting address, sketching out the work done by the society since its formation in 1804. He took his hearers to each of the countries in Europe, gave some most interesting information as to the population of each, their religious state, the work done by the agents of (be society, the treatment the agents sometimes received, and a quantity of other information, all of which was impaited in a highly interesting and instructive manner, those present enjoying a real trea*. On the conclusion of t e address the following resolutions were carried unanimously “ That a branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society be formed in Geraldine, to be called ‘The Geraldine Branch of the South Canterbury Auxiliary’; that there bo a president, a secretary, and treasurer, and three members of committee, the ministers of the town to be members ex officio ; that Dr Fish be eDded president, Air John Shaw secretary and treasurer, and Messrs fi. W. Moore, J, M. Sutherland, and K. Mackenzie members of committee.” Votes of thanks to Mr Gillies and the chairman were earned unanimously, and the meeting was closed by the Rev. Mr Todd, seor., pronouncing the Benediction.
