GERALDINE ST. PATRICK’S DAY SPORTS ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING-. The annual meeting of the above association was held at the Bush Geraldine, on Friday evening last. There were same 21 persons present. Mr E. H. Pearpoint, president of the association, occupied the chair. Before going on with the business the chairman reminded those present that at the last annual meeting it had been decided to form the old sports committee into an association. This had been done with very successful results, as the balance-sheet “would show. They had commenced the year with an actual deficit of £1 15s Id, and they now came before the members with a credit balance of £lslos 3d. (Applause.) He thought that with a little diligence and trouble the association could be made even more successful. It was a large district, and if the association were properly worked up the committee would be able to not only increase their prize list but go in for a number of things which they ceuld not have now, owing to not having sufficient funds. He regretted that so few country members were there that evening, as he had hoped to see a good proportion of country members present. Among the improvements sugdested was the obtaining of English, Irish and Scotch flags. It was thought that if this were done, and the association conducted on the lines of the Caledonian Societies of Temuka and elsewhere, it would enhance the success of the association very materially. Mr Albert apologised for the absence of several country members who were unable to attend. BALANCE-SHEET. The balance-skeet was then read. It showed that the association commenced the year with a credit balance of £3 13s 6d, against which was an outstanding liability of £5 8a 6d, consequently the year had been commenced with an actual debit ®f £1 Isa Id. The receipts from all sources had been £133 Is lid, and the expenditure £ll7 11s Bd, leaving a credit balance of £ls 10s 3d. The balance-sheet was considered highly satisfactory, and on the motion of Mr Dunlop was adopted. RECOMMENDATIONS TO INCOMING COMMITTEE. The following recommendations to the incoming committee were then made: — Mr Cunningham That a larger amount of money he devoted to wrestling; that unless the 120 yards hurdles could be run on the straight it be struck out of the programme; that a Highland fling be added to the programme. He pointed out that the money offered for the wrestling was not large enough to bring good men to the place. He also pointed out that at the previous gatherings the bicycle race had been very unsatisfactory. On his suggestion a show of hands was taken as to whether this race should be struck out or not. Those present declared in favor of its being retained. Mr Albert recommended that an Irish reel be added to the programme Mr Mcllroy recommended a fireman’s race, for firemen in full uniform. [ It was shown that the concert and ball held after last year’s gathering netted £2O, and it was unanimously decided to recommend that they be continued. Mr Kennington recommended that more short races be added to the prize list. He would suggest a 100 yards maiden, and 120 yards, 220 yards, and 1 350 yard,s open handicaps. Mr Pearpoint recommended that a single member’s ticket should admit such member and any lady he chose to bring. He thought this was only fair, as a married member’s ticket admitted himself and his wife and family. ELECTION or OFFICEES. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr E H Pearpoint ; yice-president, Mr J Cunningham ; treasurer, Mr A White. Fourteen persons were nominated for the committee, seven being required A ballot resulted in the following

being elected : Messrs B R Macdonald, N Dualop, J W Pye. J Farrell, H R Morton, A F Thompson, and F Wilson Smith. Auditor, Mr A E Hawkins. TOTJES THANKS. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Post for the use of the piano for the last concert and ball, and the secretary was instructed to notify Mrs Post of the same, A * yote of thanks to the retiring committee and to the chairman terminated the meeting. NEW COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the newly-elected committee was held afterwards, when Mr A Fisher was re-appointed secretary. It was decided to meet again to-morrow evening to arrange the programme, and transact other business. The meeting then terminated.
