S.C. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held at Timirc yesterday. Present—Messrs J. Jackson (chairman), Sinclair, E >ss, J. M. Barker, and Captain Hajfcsr. Mr M. Qainn wrote apologising for non-attendance. THE LATB MB BABKBB, The chairman said that before proceeding to the business of the meeting he thought it was hii duty to refer to the loss the board hai sustained by the death of Mr E. A. Barker. At last meeting the deoeased momber appeared likely to lire for many years. Mr Barker had been a useful member of soo'ety, and his loss would be felt on the different boards of which he had baen a member. On the Eduoation Board he (the speaker) had noted that Mr Barker had always acted in a fair and liberal manner, and as a member of the board assembled that day he had always aotad conscientiously. When he had the impression that the board were being imposed upon he spoke his mind freely, and in oases of real distress he acted the part of a eharitably-disposid gentleman. Mr Barker had served on the board since its inception on the sth November, 1885. Since then the meetings of the board had been 74, of which Mr Barker had attended 61.

The Mayor of Timaru moved, and the « Mayor of Waimate seoonded—"That this board sincerely regrets the loss (through death) of Mr E. A. Barker sinoe last meeting, and desire to plaoa on reoord the many valuable, hospitable, and charitable servioes of the deceased to this institution, its interests, that of patients, and the poor and suffering generally." The mover spoke in feeling terms of the late Mr Barker, and endorsed all the chairman had said.—The motion was carried in silence. MISCBMANHOtra. The chairman said the new doctor (Or Somerville) had entered on his daties that day. The oredit balance of the board was now £I3OO. The captain of the Aurora interviewed the board in regard to the case of one of his seamen. It was agreed—" That in the case case of Henry Mennshing the price fixed be 4* per day whilst in the hospital." Dib, Lovegrove, Hogg, Eeid and Thomas, wrote asking that the Speoial resolution passed at their request sanctioning consulting praotice by Dr Lawson be rescinded, and that the gentlemen appointed to the hospital in future perform their duties in aooordanoe with tha rules adopted by the board for the guidance of suoh officer.—After discussion it was raiolved " That the resolu- | tion standing in the hospital books of the 12th July 1889, re consulting praotice of houee suigeoD, be resoinded." An account for £2 2s oonnected with Beagley's oase was referred to the Waimate County Council. Major Moore was eleoted to fill the seat vacated by the death of Mr E. A. Barker. Dr Thomas was unanimouly elected a member of the honorary visiting staff ; and Dr Somerville, his successor at the hospital, was introduced to the members by the chairman. A good deal of charitable aid business was transacted.

Accounts amounting to £42f> 2i 4d were passed for payment, and the jtimrd'a funda are in credit £946, aubaidy of £1374 12s 9 j haying coma to hand from tha Treabury.
