The monthly meeting of the Temuka Town Board was held last night. Present—Messrs Blyth (chairman), Allan, Mason, Ooira and Olinoh, it

The overseer reported that in accordance with instructions tenders had been invited for the supply of screened shingle, the same to be considered at a special meeting of the board, held on August 20bh. No tenders were received, and fresh ones had been invited, to be considered that evening. He had been unable to obtain a screen in Timarn as suggested, but one had been made locally for £2 10s. The price submitted by a Timaru tradesman was £$ 15s. A 12in junction pipe had been laid in the main drain south of the Star Hotel. Notice had been served, on all ratepayers whose heavy traffic.in and out of premises interfered with the water tables and footpaths to have suitable and approved culverts Some were completed and others promised shortly. The discharge of drainage into Mr Hewling’s section No. 29 had been permanently stopped by Mr E. O. Dann, his local agent; Steps had been taken for the holding of the general election. In accordance with in* struotions the ranger and constables on duty had beep appointed to enforce the ob* gervance of by-law* and Impounding Act 18§4. The main epea drain from the park fence to discharge of .pipes near Star Hotel had been satisfactorily scouted. The formationof partof Fraser Street would require about 120 cubic yards of material which he expected could be procured on the same section of road. Ihp flrst well in Wood street had bsen completed, and the second commenced on Monday last. The soil consisted of solid clay and shingle, like concrete, followed by coarser shingle and blue sandy clay. There were 2ft 6m of water. The men expected to have finished that day, but the sinking was very tedioqs, Outstanding rates sued fqt» il not paid prior to that date, would fca settled on Monday next. The chairman suggested that the captain of the Fire Brigade be asked to try the wells recently briokea. Mr Mason thought that the wells would hot siand if they were not pumped during the promts of sinking. . The chairman said that he had mentioned the matter to Captain Henry who had said that it was impossible for the brigade to undertake the work. The matter was briefly discussed and it was decide to aik the Fire Brigade to engage men to pump; out the new wells the board to; subsidise the brigade to the amount of £2. The question of the extension of Fraser street was left in abeyance the chairman and overseer to inspect same. The chairman said that ho had been asked if something could not be done in respect of the registration of votes. It was a very inconvenient thing for voters to register now. It wai decided to instruct the clerk to write to A. B, 9, Rhodes, Biq., M.H.8., upon the subject end suggest to him the propriety of the appointment of a local registrar.
