THOMSON, Dbapebs and Silk Mkbcbes, T I M A R U . se2s HE MOUNT MAG DAL A MAGIn appealing for subscriptions for the Magdalen Asylum, the Sisters of the “ Good Shepherd ” desire to express, through me, their einoeie gratitude to the inhabitants of this city and the colony generally for the kind co-operation afforded them since they commenced the great work to which their Uvea are devoted. Hourly we meet with a poor Magdalen, tired of a misspent life, seeking a shelter, and finding no security against the biting blast of renewed temptation, turns away with the weight of the world's accusation, with the world’s oon» damnation, and becomes the victim of an unholy impulse, which cannot be recalled without a sigh—nay, without a tear. Kindly, therefore, bear in mind : 1, The foundation alone of the Institution was laid in 1886 in the presence of about 5000 people, and the first wing of the building was opened on the ?2ad of last July, when over 3000 spectators wore assembled on the occasion. 2, The nature, necessity, and advantages of the work of reformation have been dwelt upon by all the leading journals of the Colony, oud, in their verdict of approbation, numerous friends and admirers have joined, by substantial recognition of the claims of Mount Magdala, as may be gathered from the subjoined list of subscriptions. 3, Up to this moment the sum of over £IO,OOO has been spent on the Building and land, and more than half that amount 1 have raised by my appeals. jUL There are now over forty inmates in the Magdalen, drawn off from the prisons and otreets of tho Colony; and those include tho forlorn of every creed from Auckland lo Otago »ad from Westland to the Plains of Canterbury; hence the claim# os Mount Magdala on every part of New Zealand. 5. The inmates are trained to a life of industry, which, coupled with the voluntsry offerings of the public, will, it is hoped, meet the demands for the maintenance of hho Institution, whilst my present action is to raise funds for the erection of the Building alone, 6. Since the introduction of tho feisterhood, a little over two years ego, the work of industry has been steadily increasing, and even in that short period tho inmates have been taught to make tho slippers and shoes need ia the Institution, and thus tlm same judicious chancel ie found for the outlay of tho funds entrusted to Mount Magdala as that which exists in the other 159 Rouses of fcbo Congregation scattered over the globe, in which 1000 Ladies of rare intellectual culture and tho purest virtue bestow their devoted care on 20,000 young girls and women, drawn off from slaughter bouses and paths of crime. Believing, then, that yon fully recognise the salutary influence that Mount Magdala is destined to exercise over this young Colony —an influence that ip pow admitted everywhere—may I hope for the pleasure of having your name added to 'my list of eabßcribw®-—! am, etc., Containing Our Selection of DALEN ASYLUM.
