GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The usual menthly meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday evening. Present —Messrs W. S. Maslin (chairman), N. Dunlop, A. Sherratt, A. White, J. Williams, J. Mundell, and E. Taylor. MINUTES, The •minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. COEEESPONDBNCB.

Outward correspondence was read and approved of. Inward was read and dealt with as follows: — Prom the Paymaster-general, advisising the hoard of the forwarding of the subsidy. From Mr E. H. Pearpoint, lessee from the Domain Board of the large park, asking to have the water conveyed to the park, and offering to distribute the same and turn it into the boundary creek again.—lt was decided that the works committee should see the place, and if the same could be done at a small cost the same to he done.

From the engineers of the water race, covering final progress payment to the contractorc. —It was decided to write to the engineers, asking particulars re certain matters connected with the work. The progress payment was passed. From Mr D. Macdonald, asking for the water to he conveyed to his section. —Application to lie over for the

present. A number of other applications for water were before the board, and it was decided that the works’ committee should visit each place and have the necessary work done if found to bo advisable. The works’ committee were also empowered to have the water convey to the sump opposite Mr Coles’ if found practicable.

THE PEOrOSBD PIKE BEIGADE. The chairman, as representing the public meeting held in connection with forming a fire brigade, stated that the meeting had decided to asK the board to strike a rate of Is m the £, so as to provide the necessary funds for starting the brigade. • He

now asked the board to take steps to strike such rate. Mr White moved tbe motion standing in bis name-" That tbe necessary steps be taken towards striking a rate of Is in the £.* It was absolutely necessary to have a fire engine an appliances «r else tbe water supply would be useless. Mr Mundell was in favor ot tne rate. He considered it tbe fairest way of raising the money. He would second tbe motion. Mr A: Sherratt moved as an amendment—“ That the rate be 6d m the £.” He did not think tbe Is rate was necessarv. He thought the brigade would not cost anything like £2UU. Thought it would be more satisfactory if they bad a 6d rate now and 6d next y6 Mr Williams was in favor of the Is rate, as in would reach all and be the fairest means of raising the money. Mr Dunlop was decidedly m favor of the Is rate, although he stated he would, be one of the heaviest ratepayers. Ha was convinced that a brigade could not be formed for much less than £2OO. The chairman was also in favor or the Is rate. Mr Sherratt’s amendment was not seconded.

Mr White’s motion was then put and carried. It was decided to take steps immediately to prepare the valuation roll, and strike the rate, On the preposition of Mr Dunlop it was decided that the board should at once advertise for offers of an engine, pick out a suitable site for the erection of an engine house, and push on the formation of a brigade as speedily as possible. BEMOVAL OP NIGHT SOIL. One tender was received for the removal of night soil.—lt was decided to inquire further into the matter before taking any further steps in it at present. OUTSTANDING BATES. A list of those ratepayers who had paid their arrears during the month, and also the few remaining outstanding, was laid upon the table.—lt was decided to allow the latter seven days more in which to pay up, and then hand the list to the board’s solicitor. ACCOUNTS. Accounts were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
