At Grey mouth the miners and managers of the Brunner Mine are at variance over taking out the pillars of the mine, and in consequence sixty-six of the'miners are out of work, At Beeftoon criminal informations for libel have been served on James Wilkie, editor, and W. Hall, publisher, of the recently-established evening paper, the Guardian. The suit is brought by H. G. Hankin. Considerable interest appears to be taken in the new cable breakwater invention. The patentee has signed a contract for Port Elizabeth, on the Wfist Coast, where a large area of coal is ready to be worked, and no less 1 than ten local bodies, Harbor Boards and others, are in communication with the Wellington representative for the purpose of seeing whether the invention is applicable to their respective localities.

The Gisborne farmers are starting a Co-operative Association with a capital of £2OOO.

The bridge in course of construction over Mokahoka river, connecting Ekatahuna and Parkville, collapsed on Tuesday, taking with it a man named O’Brien, who notwithstanding a fall of over 100 feet escaped with a few bruises. The loss will fall on Mr Bryant, the contractor. The 'Waimakariri Board of Conservators have resolved to take so'me necessary precautions against heavy floods should such occur, as several places are reported weak and threaten Christchurch with an overflow in case of heavy flood.
