PRESENTATION.

Mr James Kalaugher, who has just severed his connection with the Geraldine Public School, owing to his „ fourth year of pupil teachership having expired, was the recipient yesterday of a proof of the respect and esteem in which he is held by those with whom he has been closely '" connected during the time he has been in the School. Mr Kalaugber’s V interest in the school commenced when as a boy he occupied a seat in the lower classes. Since then, by steady perseverance, he has successfully passed through all the standards, and has for the past four years filled the position of pupil teacher, with credit to himself, and advantage of his pupils. His success as a pupil teacher has been most marked, and at the last pupil teachers’ examination be came cut at the top of the list by many points. There were present at the school yesterday, the Rev. G. Barclay, member of the Board of Education, and Messrs W. S. Maslin (Chairman), and N. Dunlop, members of the Committee. Mr Aitken, Head faster of the school, in a few words explained to the children the reason of their being assembled that afternoon, and called on Miss Maggie Dunlop to read an address which had been prepared and make the presentation. The address was as follows ; “ Dear Mr Kalaugher, Your schoolmates, pupils, and friends, have united to give you, on your leaving this school, a small memorial of the time you spent here as a pupil and as teacher. We hope not only that fyou will have long life to wear this chain, and that it will bind you, wherever you go, to the place where your school days were spent, but also that yov will he very successful as a teacher, and that you will always meet with friends who will esteem you as truly and faithfully as your friends in Geraldine do.”

Miss Dunlop then presented Mr Kalaugher with a handsome gold albert watch chain and key. Mr Maslin, the Eev. Mr Barclay, and Mr - Dunlop each addressed those present, and spoke of the zeal and energy displayed by Mr Kalaugher, first as a pupil and afterwards as a teacher. His departure would bo a real and severe loss to the school.

By his earnestness and conscientious . endeavour to do his duty he had set ' the younger ones an example which they might follow with advantage. The speakers concluded by wishing him every success in his future career. MrKalaugherbriefly responded, thanking Miss Maggie Dunlop and the others for the trouble they had taken in order to give him such a handsome and valuable present. Mr Aitken then called for three cheers from the .children, which was responded to most Ipheartily, and the school separated.r The articles presented were purchased from Mr W. Coltman, of Geraldine.
