During tbe last year 19,748 sheep were frozen at the Southland Meat Freezing Works, and were exported from the Bluff. If tho works had been fully employed good returns might have been expected, as a not profit of £217 was made for the five months of the actual operations. Another shipment is now being got ready for the s.s. Selembria, which calls at the end of the month.

A Westport man, giving the name of John Gardner, waa arrested on the Buller road, thirteen miles from Westport, on Tueadaj, by Constable Bowden, of the Lyell, He is wanted for the sticking-up case at the Birch Hill Statidn, Marlborough. It is alleged that he entered the hut of ft man named Anderson and stole a sum of money, and fired a rerol rer at Anderson. The prisoner answers the description, and admits being at the station on the day in question, but denies having had any row there. A man named Mark Spratt was found dead in a paddock at Mount Eden on Monday mornirg. He had gone there to work, and was suddenly taken ill and died In a short time.

A man named Joseph Osborne, engaged on the Napier Harbour works, was drowned on Tuesday morning, being washed off the monolith casing as it was being lowered. Osborne could not swim, and before another workman who swam out could reach him he sank.
