IRISH AFFAIRS

Dublin, Jan. 17

The freedom of the city of Dublin has been conferred on the Marquis of Ripon and the Right Hon. John Morley. At a meeting of the Council at which it was decided to grant the foregoing honors, stormy and excited speeches were delivered. Mr Rbaw-Lefpvro states in a letter that the Marquis of Clsnricado dare not allow evictions to continue, despite coercion, in the face of the facts which have been revealed of late, Mr Michael Pavitt corroborates the statement made by Mr Blunt that the Government were imprisoning the Nationalist leaders to assist them in solving the Irish difficulty. London, Jan. 18.

Sir Michael Hicks-Beach has resigned bis seat in the Cabinet, Speaking at Glutton, he said that Ireland must first be convinced that the supremacy of the British Parliament must be maintained, and then the Government must consider the Irish problem with boldness and sympathy. He favored the adoption of a system of local Government when order had been restored, and the placing of members on an equality with those of Scotland in settling local affairs. He also expressed his willingness to re-enter the Cabinet whenever he was required.
