THE GOLD DISCOVERIES IN THE NORTH ISLAND.
The following is an extract ,fronv : a private telegram received in,Christchurch on Tuesday afternoon, from Mr James Durward. who is now in Auckhnd representing a Christchurch syndicst* with the view of acquiring additional interests in the neighborhood of Waitoa. Mr Darward telegraphs :—“ Don’t sell my shares; would not be fair, as I am now satisfied that somelhing is wrong.” Tliis refers to the Waitoa Goldmihing Company (Smith’s land), in which . Mr Durward is a shareholder. : The Auckland correspondent of tiie' Pres? telegraphed on Wednesday ; —“ I had an interview with the assayeriof tlie Bank of New Zealand to-day, during which he said he was fully convinced, from the result of his own investigations and assays, that there is gold in payable quantities at Waitoa.” : ‘ - Mr Darward, of Christ churchy in' (lie course ofan interview tlie Waitoagoldfield at Auck’land on Thursday; expressed bis opinion that the stuff had been' tampered wuh.' A piece of a b'ock of stone sent down from Pa*etere'for building purposes was assayed at Auckland on Tuesday, : when the result was a'yield of St'wts 6grs of gold and 2dwts of silver to the (on, valued at I2s per top. This stone certainly was not salted, .and it sterns that a payablc goldfield exists at Paletere.
