Emotion Addbbss. —Mr A. E. Q-. Rhodes addresses the electors at Pleasant Valley on Monday evening next. Ehtebtainment at Woodbury.—An entertainment takes place in the Woodbury schoolroom this evening. Sale at Hilton. —Mr W. 8. Maslin holds a large sale of a storkeeper's stock-in-trade at Hilton on Monday next. Fishing Tackle. —Messrs Velvin and Taylor, Temuka, have just opened a splendid assortment of fishing tackle, and invito the inspection of anglers.—Advt. Football. —The football match Ashburton v. Geraldine, which was to have been played to-day, has fallen through, owing to the Ashburton men not being able to play. Arrivals and Departures. —During the month of August IUS persons arrived in the colony and 940 left it. The loss to the colony from tho excess of emigration over immigration for the eight months of this year has been 33. Sadb of Town Peopbett. Messrs J. Mundell sell valuable town property at Geraldine on Wednesday next, and also a large assortment of pottery ware cups, saucers, etc. They also sell one half-acre section at Winchester on Tuesday next, Presbyterian Church, Temuka.— The services at the Presbyterian Church, Temuka, to-morrow, will be conducted in the morning by the Rev. W. Elliott, of Wellington, and in the evening by the Bev. J. Dickson, the newly-inducted minister. There will be no service at Waitohi in the afternoon. Delated Trains. —The north exprese was delayed yeaterdaj for about three quarters of an hour through a stoppage of the line near Hampden. The late train from Christchurch was also later than usual and only arrived in Timaru at about 8.45 p.m. Blub Eibbon Meeting. A pubh'o meeting in connection with the Blue Ribbon Gospel Temperance Mission, takes place in tho Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Monday evening next. The Bev. Mr Elliott of Wellington, will be the principal speaker, and the various Ministers of the District will also take part. There will be a collection to defray expenses.

Teain Arrangements. —lt is announced that second class Ssturday return tickets on the New Zealand railways, available for firstclass carriages, will be issued to football, cricket, and bowling teams, of not less than 15 members. These ticks's will be available for return for a week from the date of issue. Where a single journey only is to be made second class tickets will be issued, available for first class carriages. This regulation takes effect on and after the 12th inst. News FROM Fur. — The Wainui arrived nt Auckland on Thursday morning from Fiji, There is no additional news of the Samoan war, but she brings very favorable reports of the sugar crops and crushing in Fiji. —The agitation for annexation to Victoria is being vigorously prosecuted, and Mr Pritchard, editor of the Fiji Times, has been appointed to proceed to Melbourne to present petit ons ta both Houses of Parliament. —There is a rumor of fresh gold discoveries,—'H.M.9. Nelson left on ]2bh August for Honolulu, VaIiEDIOTORT. —Before the conclusion of the business of the Grand Jury at the Auckland Supreme Court on Wednesday, the foreman read a presentment to Mr Justice Ward expressing the gratification of the Grand Jury at the good opinion held of Auckland juries by Mr Justice Ward, and regret at the judge’s retirement from the district. The address also contained reference to Mrs Ward. His Honor suitably replied, speaking of the Kindergarten school established by Mrs Ward and aided by the generous donations of citizens, and bespoke for the institution support and continued success.

Temuka Dairt Factory. —The monthly meeting of the Directcs of the Terauka Dairy Company was held yesterday. Present—Messrs Brown (Chairman), Austin, Scott, Cain, Quinn, and Dr Hayes. Accounts amounting to *855 18s 2d were passed for payment. A plan' of the proposed house t'or the manager was submitted and approved, and it was decided to advertise in the Timaru Herald and Temuka Leader for tenders for its construe tion in brick and wood, a special meeting to bo called for the 23rd inst, to receive the same. The Secretory was instructed to collect all outstanding accounts as soon as possible, and after some further routine business the meeting terminated. The Spurious Notes.— A photographer named Peter Williamson, who has been carrying on business in Brunswick street, South Dunedin, for some months, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon on his own premises on a charge of forging Bank of New Zealand £1 notes. Detectives Henderson and Annan, who made the arrest, found paper similar to that used for photographing the notes on Williamson’s premices, and it is stated that proof can be adduced that some of these notes have been passed bv Williamson. The accused was brought up at the Police Court on Thursday and remanded, —A telegram to hand last, night says; “ The police have arrested Williamson, senr., for uttering forged notes. It is understood that the younger prisoner mode a full confession.”

Mr Palmer at Ashburton.— Mr Wm. Palmer addressed a meeting of about 150 electors in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Ashburton, on Wednesday evening. The address was similar to that already reported in this paper, but the speaker took occasion to deny (hat he had been illtreated at the Hinds. Only a little flour had been thrown, Mr E. Elston proposed, and Mr J. W. Mcßae seconded, a vote of thanks to Mr Palmer. Mr MoEae remarked that he had come to look at this Mr Palmer, and found that he had known him for a numb# of years. If people thought Mr Palmer v aj aift, they were very much mistaken, Mr Palmer bad started in a humble position, but ho had worked Inmselt up to be a successful farmer, and was deserving of great praise for his industry and prudence. The vote of thanks was carried unanimously. Ihb Alleged Illicit Still Case. —At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Timaru, on Thursday last, before P, LeOren, Esq., J.P., William Paul was charged on the information of Mr C. E. Cooper (Collector of Customs, Timaru) with having in his possession certain artic es intended fur distillation purposes, to wit —1 vat, 2 hogsheads, 1 keg, 2 zinc-lined cases, 2 ten-gallon tine, 1 oil can, 1 jar, between July 11th and September 2nd, 1887, tn contravention of the Distillation Act. The accused applied for a remand, which was granted until Monday next, bail being allowed, accused in £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO each. Paul is a middle- iged man, and farmed a 75-acre section at Mount Misery. He was very popular in the neighborhood, and as he was about to leave the district the settlers had arranged to make a presentation to him. The presentation was to be made at Putherland's at an entertainment on Wednesday evening, and the school was crowded. Before anvt'dng was done, however, Comstibh Stanley, of Pleasant Point, arrived and made the arrest, which caused considerable excitement.
