HE BEHAVED STRANGELY.

At one period of Chief Justice Chase's life his uncle the bishop was about to start away on one of his circuit rides, and as he was leaving he told Salmon ho might kill and dress a pig that afternoon. Young Salmon assented and though be had never had any experience of the kind, he felt at the time no doubt that he could accomplish the task. He found it a bigger job than he had bargained for. The catching of the pig itself was nearly half a day's work, but he finally succeeded in getting it upon its back and thrusting the butcher's knife through its throat into its heart. Then came the question as to bristles. He had seen dressed pigs, but their hides were, always as .smooth ,as a baby's cheek, and although he heard that farmers usually, scalded a hog to get the hair off, he kn9w nothing of the mode of operating. Nevertheless, be heated a barrel of boiling water, and by laying this at the side of a bench at an angle of 45 deg. he was able to slide the pig into it. But he held it too long, or the water was too hot. At any rate the hairs stuck as tight as though they had been glued, and the most frantic pulls would not dislodge a bristle. It was now night and he was working by candle, fle was in despair .until finally he thought of his uncle's razors. He rushed upstairs, got tliewej and shaved the pig from, nose to tail. It v. as a beautiful job, and the bishop coDgratuluted him when he returned on the cleanliness of the pork, but, when he next went to shave himself " he behaved very strangely."
