Melbourne, May 6. Latest news from New Caledonia states that the French warship Ducbaffant returned to Noumea from Wallis Island, where M. Chauvot has been installed as French Resident in yiew of the possible annexation of the idand by England or Germany. Sydney, May 6. Arrived—Hauroto, s.s. The Government has consented to a reduction of the beer duties to 3 per cent, The Premier announced that the property tax would be {proposed before the end of the year, Articles have been signed for a sculling race between flanlan and Beach, to be rowed on the Nepean River in November next, for £SOO a side. May 5. The Chinesft Commissioners to Australia arrived at Sydnej to-day, and were received with due ceremony. Brisbane, May 6. A court martial on Lieut, Hesketh, of the Queensland gunboat Gayudah, ordered him to be dismissed.
