Held Overs— Our leading article, correspondence, etc., are held over till our next issue. Temuka Monthly Sale. —The monthly sale at Temuka takes place to-morrow. K. F. Gray advertises entries. Meeting or Ladies. A meeting of ladies composing the Temuka Volunteer Fancy Fair Committee takes place on Saturday next to decide as to the disposal of the goods left over from the Fancy Fair. Electoral Rolls, -- The County electoral rolls for the Levels, Temuka, Geraldine, and Mount Peel Ridings are now open for inspection at the respective Road Board offices and at the County Council office, Timaru. Annual Meetings of Ratepayers.— The annual meeting of ratepayers in the Mount Peel Road District takes place on Monday next, and the annual meetings of ratepayers in the. Geraldine and Temuka districts on the following Tueaday.

The ClTlli Service. The Wellington correspondent of the Press says a determination has been come to by the Government to extend the hours of the Civil Service from 9 till 6. It is reported that Mr Reynolds proposed a 15 per cent, reduction all round, but the Ministers would not consent to it. Football Bulbs.— At a meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union on Monday night it was decided to adopt the English rules, in regard to scoring, viz, ;—A match shall be decided by a majority of points. A goal shall be equal to three points, a try to one pointj when a goal is kicked from a try the goal only is scored. The English rules in regard to professionalism were also adopted. Thb Timaeu Libel Oaib. that in the case of Ivers v. Kerr notice of motion for a new trial has been filed in Christchurch, The following are the grounds: —(1) That the judge wrongly admitted plea and evidence of justification. (2) That thb verdict was against the weight of evidence. (3) That the words were obviously defamatory, and were incapable of innocent construction. (4) That the verdict was a perverse one and contrary to law. . Geraldine Road Boakd.— The following are the nominations lecoived by the Returning Officer, Mr C. E. Thb Queen’s Jubilee. —A telegram from Wellington states that the Minister for lattice is carefully considering the desirability of cele* brating the Queen’s Jubilee by releasing prisoners sentenced to a term of imprisonment for first offences of a serious nature and whose conduct since their conviction have been exemplary. The prison authorities are understood to be strongly in favor of releasing a considerable number of prisoners who do not belong, to the habitual convict class, but before any action is taken in the matter the Government will probably communicate with the Home Government on the subject. R.M. Godet, Temuea.— At the above Court yesterday, before J. S.'B’swick, Esq., R.M., Mrs Heap sued William Tosswill, solicitor, Timaru, for £6 19s 6d for board and lodging. Judgment had been confessed, butMr Aspinall, who appeared for the plaintiff took exception to the confession on the ground that it was not witnessed. The Court therefore decided to hear the case, and after taking evidence gave judgment for the amount claimed and costs. Jackson v. Hornbrouk—Claim 13s. Judgment by default, Several crises were struck out. Run Cvee; -Captain Mclnness, of the Salvation Army, Temuka, and Messrs C. Robinson apd Matchem narrowly escaped a serious accident on Monday night. They were ‘■landing on the road near the Catholic Church, when two persons on horseback (who apparently came round Dunford s corner) rode oyer them. Mr Matcheui had one of his thumb nails torn off, and all were knocked down and badly bruised. The riders did. not pull up to see what damage they had done, but rode quickly away. The night was a dark one.

Waitohi Fiat Library,— An ordinary meeting of the Waitohi Flat Library Committee waa held in the schoolroom on Monday last. The members present were —Messrs J, Fraser (Chairman), L. Scott, D. Cunningham, A. J. Andrews, M. Moore, and J. Watson (Secretary). The Secretary reported that he had received from the Government a grant of £Blßs 4d towards the Library, which amount he had paid into the Bank of New Zealand, Temuka, and that the balance to the credit of the Institution amounted to £22 10s Id. On the motion of Mr Scott, seconded by Mr Andrews, it was resolved that the library building be put in a thorough state of repair, and that the Chairman and the Secretary be instructed to call for local tenders for the said work, which tenders would be considered at a speoia' meeting j;o be held in the schoolroom on Monday, the 2nd of May. This being all the business the meeting terminated.

Sale of Stock, Eto. Messrs J. Mundeli and Go. held a most successful sale of stock and sundries on account of Mr Angus Macdonald at their yards, Geraldine, yesterday. The well-known excellence of Mr Macdonald’s stock attracted a very large attendance of buyers. The bidding was brisk,' and all the lots offered changed hands at very satisfactory prices. Timaeu High School.—A meeting of the Board of Governors was held on Tuesday. The Rector’s report showed the attendance to have v been 100. The offer of a scholarship by the Caledonian Society was accepted. Mr Clark applied to have on iron fence instead of a wire one, and the application was granted. Mr Main’s salary was increased to Messrs Burke and Earl’s farms were relet to them. It was resolved to lake summary proceedings for the recovery of overdue fees. It was also resolved—“ That the part of the Standing Committee’s report recommending reorganisation of salaries in the school be adopted, such reorganisation to include capitation in regard to school fees.”
