CONCERT AT GERALDINE.

The concert given ,on Thursday even(iqg in aid of the funds of the Geraldine Mr,ass Band was k most decided success. The Oddfellows’.' Sail was crowded in bVery part, many having to content themselves with standing rqom. Mr G. Ward occupied the position of Chairman. The first item on the programme was an overture by the Band. Mr T. Sherratt came next with “ The tempest,” in which he succeeded admirably. Miss Andrews followed.) with a solo, “ I cannot sing the old songs,” and in answer to an encore sang .“.The bridge.” Mr Wilkinson, whose appearance on the stage waa the. signal for a storm of applause, came next with a solo (comic), “ Only one,” for which he was encored and responded. Mr Lodge aaog, in good style, “The midshipmite.” Mrs Porteous contributed the solo “ You’ll remember me,” and in response to a unanimous encore gave “ Bee that my grave’s kept green.” Mr Logan followed with a comic song, in character, “ The masher,” and was forced to reappear, when he substituted “The Parson and the Olerk.” Mr Penny followed this with the solo, in character, “ Always true blue.” Miss Beckley came next with. the. solo Chiming bells of long ago.” Selections by the Band was the next item on the programme. This was followed by a comic song by Mr Wilkinson, “ A little German Band,” and again he had to respond to an encore, when he sang “ The nervous man.” Miss Andrews rendered the solo Dreamland” in a pleasing manner, and : was followed by'Miss Miller, who achieved a great success with the solo “ Scotland’s glory,” and in response to a well-deserved encore gave “The miller and the maid.” Mr Fenny contributed a: negro song, in character, “The golden slippers,” and was encored. Mrs Porteous followed with a song in character, “ His father keeps a brewery,” for which she had to return and sing another, also in character. Selections by the Band brought the musical part of the entertainment to a dose. After an interval of ten minutes, the laughable farce “ Pheliria O’Toole's courtship” was played. The parts were taken by Messrs G. Kruse, H; B, Pratt, W, Sherratt, H. Chiverscn, Wi Stonehouse, j and W. Flemming, each ii of whom per- J formed his part in creditable manner, tho audience frequently testifying their appreciating of the piece. This concluded the evening’s entertainment, which towing to the length of the programme, , : the demands of a somewhat exacting audience, was not concluded till 11 o’clock. On .the ; fall of the curtain, Mr T. Sherratt, bandmaster,: .appeared before the footlights and thanked 1 the audience for their attendance and’the practical interest they had shown in' the Band by coming forward that evening in such large numbers to assist them. He also , thanked all those who bad'taken an active part in the concert. A special word of praise..is due to Misa Foster, who accompanied the singers, for her excellent playing, which gave entire satisfaction ts both the performers

and the audience. The Band are also to be congratulated upon the progress they have made of late. Having avoided the error which is so common in many bands of playing too loudly while performing in a public room their execution of the pieces selected for Thursday evening was really enjoyable. Mr Sherratt deserves all praise for the time and patience he has devoted in bringing the Band to their present state of efficiency.
