TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Tinmrn H*rbor Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs J. H. Sutter (Chairman), F. Acton, K. F. Gray, A. Hayes, J. Kelland, J. W. WiUon, T. Teschemaker, J. Taibot and M. Jonas. Mr Sims sent an apology for nonattendance. Correspondence was dealt will as follows : From Mr Oakden, of Dunedin, offering to sell the Board a Prießtraan dredge.—The offer was declined. From Mr Morilzon, German Consul, Dunedin, stating that though two German vessels had refused to come to limaru during the past month, he believed Timaru would bo a port of call within two yeard. From Mr Bradley, waterman, requesting permission to work three boats with two licenses, —Permission refused. From Mr Maxwell, General Manager ! of Railways, stating that the plans for ! laying the rails on the Moody wharf would be placed in hand immediately. From the Marine Department, forwarding a chart of the harbnr of Timaru. —Resolved : " That the Harbormaster be instructed to de6ne error as shown on the map now received by the Board from the Marine Department, and that the Secretary be requested to write asking that this error may be amended." From the Marine Department, asking for information re harbor lights.—The Secretary said he had sent the information. From Messrs McEwan and Co. stating that the new Priestman dredge would be delivered next month ; also, stating that they had shipped further lots of cement in anticipation of the acceptance of their tender.—The Board decided to accept the cement provided that the cost be not more than, and the quality equal to, the last lot. From the Minister of Lands, stating, in answer to the Board, that the Government could not at present surrender the powers they had over the foreshore in accordance with the Timaru Harbor Act, 1881. Proposed by Mr Talbot, seconded by Mr Teschemaker, and carried—" That the Board's solicitor, Mr C. T. fl. Perry, be authorised to appear and act in its behalf in an action brought by the Shaw Savifl and Albion Company against the Board, and that the necesaary authority be sealed with the Board'• seal." The Committed appointed to enquire into the delays to shipping, etc, complained of, reported that they had drawn the attention of the Harbor Master to the necessity of getting the work commenced at an earlier hour in the morning; they thought when the Moody wharf is completed it will obvipte the necessity of sailing vessels having to html so frequently off from the wharf to make room for steamers ; they had given instructions that iu the event of bad weather the surfboats shall be worked to the wharf, and have made it part of the duty of CoHis, the diver, to take charge of the boats on these occasions.—The report was adopted. The standing Committee reported that they bad received 22 applications for the post of Assistant Harbor Master and recommended the appointment of Captain T. N. Clarkson ; they had accepted the tender of Mile?, Archer and Co. for storing cement ; and had accepted the tender of Palliser and Jones, for placing the mell mell blocks at 8s per cubic yard.
