SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

WOODBURY. The monthly meeting of this Committee was held on Monday, October 4th. Present —Messrs J. H. Dean (Chairman), Fiatman, Hammond, Heatley, Gick and Scott. Mr Middlemiss had asked the Chairman to apologise for his Don-attendance, on account of a bad cold. 'the miDutes of the last ordinary and one special meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman laid before the Committee a balance sheet of the prize fund, which showed the amount available to be aB follows : —Balance in hand from last yoar, 18a 7£d j rent of room Bnd proceeds of lecture and concert, £7 15s ; total, £8 13s 7R Mr Flatman, Visitor for tbe month, reported visiting the school, and finding it in good order and working satisfactorily. One or two trifling matters needing the attention of.the Visitor had been seen to. Mr Heatley was appointed Visitor for the ensuing month. An account of £1 12s 11(1, for sundries, was passed and paid. Mr William Scott tendered his resignation as a member of the Committee. He was sorry that his removal to the North Island necessitated his doing so. He trusted, however, to meet tho present members at some not fur distant date.—Mr fc'cott'3 resignation was accepted v.th regret, the members expressing a hope that Mr Scolt was removing to better his prospects, and wished him every success in bis new undertaking. The usual vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting. PLEASANT VALLEY. The monthly meeting of this Committee was held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening last. Present—Messrs 3L Brophy (Chairman), J. Gregan, D. Gregan, A. Lysaght, and A. Best. The minutos of the previous meetiDg were read and confirmed. The Master's report was read, which showed that the attendance had fallen off during the month. —It was decided to write to the parents of the absentees requesting them to send their children more regularly. £■ The Chairman stated that according to instructions at the last meeting re grant for shed he had forwarded the voucher for the lame to.the Board of Education, but as jet bad received no reply. He also reported on, behalf of the Visitors and Works Committee that the sohool was working satisfactorily and that the contractor for the repairs had earned out the work to the satisfaction of the Committee. Messrs Lysaght and Best were appointed Visitors for,the ensuing month. . , Accounts' to the amount of £7 8s 3d were payment, and the meeting adourned till Saturday, October 30th. RANGITATA SCHOOL. At the monthly meeting of the Rangitata Sobooj Committee on Wednesday, Sept. 29th, Messrs A. Chalmers (Chairman), McNiven, Clayton, Winter, Gynes, and Barney were present. The Master's report showed the number on the roll to be 43, highest attendance 37, and average 32. It was decided to request the Board of Eduoation to grant a Sewing Mistress for the school, Mrs Mahan being recommended for the post. It was also decided to again request an enlargement of the school.' ' The Inspector's report was considered satisfactory, as was also that'of the Visitor. It was decided to fence the school ground this month, and to grant a holiday on the second day of the TiriiarU Shbw.'" The Salvation Army were granted permission to bold, a service in the school, and the meeting terminated. HILTON. . The monthly meeting of the Hilton School Committee was. held on Monday evening. Present—Messrs Bradley (Chairman), Jones, and Beattie. The monthly report of the Master, Mr Taylor, showed a total of 81 on the roll, and' aa average attendance of 62. The report complained of irregular attendance on the part of the children, the absentees averaging 23 per cent. It was resolved to ' wait for a full meeting to discuss what steps should be taken. "/ A letter was received from Mrs J. Brien complaining of the large amount of her book account.—The matter was referred to Mr Taylor. The Chairman and Mr Beattie reported that they had inspected the chimney in the Master's house, and found that it was nearly built close, which prevented the smoke' from escaping.—lt was resolved that a memo, to that effect be forwarded to the' Board of Education. The Chairman stated that he had granted a day's holiday on Friday, instead of the two usual half-holidays given on the Geraldine race days. A cheque for £llßs lid, on account of books, was received, and the meetirjg terminated.
