Correspondence was road From the Clerks to the Geraldine and femuka Road Boards, giving information as to rates of wages and horse hire in their respective districts. From Mr J. W. White, enclosing an amended form of agreement between contractors and the Corporation. overseer's report. The Overseer’s report was then read as fallows; — “ To the Chairman. “ Sir,—l have the honor to repoit for the information of the Board that since your last meeting I have visited moat of the roads in the Sherwood, Clayton, and Raiocliff districts, going through the Orari Gorge and returning by Rsincliff. “ The Main road from Tripp’s gate to the boundary on North Opuha river has bees put in a thorough state of repair for the winter, and, excepting the bridge over Clayton river, which is partly carried away, is all that can be desired. “ Butler’s road, Rhine’s road, and the Cross road are but little used, and require nothing done to them at present. “ The Opuha Gorge road to the bush is in a bad state, and requires filling in and remetalling in places for about five miles. There is more traffic (for firewood) on this road than the other by-roads. It is, however, too wet, and the gravel pits are two fdil of Water, for work to bo done on it this winter. “ The cutting into flame's creak on the Main road is in danger of falling in at no distant date, as the creek has worked in and carried away the bank to the edge of the road. Some protection by planting willows or otherwise should be provided, or the cutting will have to be carried farther into the terrace, “The Clayton River bridge requires three spans to reach the north bank, but as this is continually falling in the bridge would have to be extended beyond the three apaos to make a permanent job. “In the Raiacliff district, to which the surface men have been shifted, the rains that have already fallen have done considerable damage. “On the Cattle Yalley road, where the hill rises from Burke’s Pass road, large boles have been washed in the water-tables, and the water pouring down and across the road will soon do serious damage. “The Kakaiiu and Burke’s Pass road requires repairs, some small slips clearing away, and water-tables clearing out for a distance of about three miles.

“ Repairs are also wanted on the Mount Micbatol Yalley road (as soon aa the Messrs Wilson’s grain carting is finished), the Spar road on the cutting, the Home Bush road, and Gudex’s road. On the latter a soft stone culvert has continually been broken through, and at present a dangerous bole exists there. Drain pipes well protected are about to be laid down at once, which will be lasting. “The above named repairs, though not extensive in any one place, are scattered over a considerable extent of country. I have instructed the foreman to proceed with, them at once before the damage increases. These repairs, with constant attention to fords and a'ips tiiat may occur, will, I consider, keep the surface men and the two carts fully occupied until spring, after which, as far as I can ■e», the roads will all be in goed order until next winter, excepting the following, only to be done in the summer tune : The Opuha Gorge road to the bush ; the Kakahu and Burke’s Pass road at C. Baddon's paddock (here the Board will have to consider the advisability of diverting the road to avoid a large and constantly recurring slip); and a portion •f the Spur road, where the stones want rebreaking for some distance. “Id the Peel Forest district 1 advertised for tenders for levelling, metalling, and blinding the Rangitata Main road from near the eastern boundary to Pithie’s corner, and from the finger post to the Main road. Specifications and tenders for this work are now before you. “ I am repairing the Main road from Pithie’s corner to Peel Forest with day labor, and have had Blair’s corner, Griffen’s road and the bridge cutting put to rights. “ I have not yet passed the work done in Nd; 2 contract, Andrew’s creek, as the specifications were not carried out. That will soon be finished, together with three days’ extra work, as far as the first crossing shove the yards, the Bush track, and Black Birch Creek track.

“The crossing at the Syren has been

pit right, and from henceforth MrMitlon baa undertaken to do all slight repairs that may be required. *• The road through Pee! Forest as far as the new road wants slight repairs, A drain should be reopened where Clark’s road crosses the Main road, and a new plank is wanted for the footbridge on Eugene’s creek. “The Crari crossing on Tripp’s road has been pat right, (he Reserve fence on the south sids mended, and some concrete work in the next creek repaired, “I have inspected McMillan’s road as directed, and find that rents want filling slid stones breaking as far as the road is installed, but to metal the road as far as the formation extends seems a useless expense, there being absolutely no traffic upon it ; moreover a branch road is laid off on the map to McMillan’s house, jftpugh not formed. ■ ■’•‘ffho fences round fhe office sections fiayebeen grubbed and cut, andhayetp, bebqroed. The other plantation fence? require the same treatment.—l am, etc., “ C. S. Totxon, 9ye*aeer."

The Overseer was instructed to have the various above-named works attended to. In the case of cutting into Raine’s creek, to apply for a gravel reserve of five acres in the moat convenient position ; in the case of the slip, Kakahn and Burke’s Pass road, to meet Mr Mackay on the spot on a day to he named ; to cad for tenders by next Board day for remetailing a portion of the Mount Peel and Geraldine Boundary road, and repairing the remainder; to report those not attending to the gorse notices ; to meet Mr Thew regarding the work asked for on McMillan’s road. ACCOUNTS. Various accounts were passed for payment, viz ; On Peel Forest roads, £27 19s ; Clayton, Sherwood, and Raincliff roads, £36 8s ; miscellaneous accounts, £7 5« 9d ; total, £7l 12s 9d. The meeting then adjourned.
