THE HON. W. ROLLESTON AT GERALDINE.
The Hon. Mr Rolleston addressed the electors of Geraldine on Wednesday night. There were about 200 persons present, Bnd it was one of the most orderly meetings ever held in Geraldinp. The greatest attention was paid to his address, not the slightest interruption occurring from the beginning to the end.
Mr Angus Macdonald was Toted to the chair, and expressed a wish that the audience would give Mr Ilolleston a patient hearing. He would haye liked that either Mr Postlethwaite, Mr Slack, or Mr Pearpoint should have taken the chair. '1 he electors of Geraldine could not have made a better choice than Mr Rolleston. lie was trua as steel, although he (the speaker) had occasion to oppose him at the last election—but Mr Rolleston knew the reason why. Mr Rolleßton addressed the meeting to the same effect as already published. He was listened to patiently, and sat down amidst great applause.
Mr Shiers asked Mr Rollifston if he were in favor of reducing tht number of representative in the House, and enlarging the present electoral* riistriots, as he had said he was in favor of retrcnchmpnt ?Mr Rolleston said his opinion was that it would not do to go back \o the old state of affairs. He thought that it was advisable to have numbers in the House, Mr Coltmar, asked Mr Rolleston if he were in favor of doing away with the honorarium of tho Upper House ? —Mr Rolleston was not in fayor of that, because he was of opinion that if such was the case the House would be composed of only speculators. Nr Dunlop wished to ask Mr Rolleston's views on the bankruptcy laws?—Mr Rolleston said the question was brought before him at Temuka, but as the subject did not come under hit notice in his department he did not know much about it. Ho understood that the laws required amendment. No other person coming forward with any questions, Mr Coltman proposed a vote of thanks to, and confidence in, Mr Rolleston.
The Rev. Mr Bit relay seconded the proposal, which was carried with acclamation.
Mr Rolleston returned thanks to the meeting for the very patient he* ring
they had given him, and for tho very cordial vote of thanks. lie then proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Macdonald for the able manner in which he had presided over the meeting, anid this having been carried, the proceedings then terminated.
