The Pall Mall Gazette of February 4 gives one of its serio-comic special reports "By our own Revolutionist," of the meeting of Socialists at the Holborn Town Hall a few days before the riots. " One thousand hungry workmen " were present. Champion, one of the four committed for trial for the outbreak in the West End, occupied the chair. He is described as "an officer in an infantry regimenc not loDg ago." All the labor representatives in the House of Commons had been invited, but not one came. Champion prepoaed as a cure for the existing distress that Government should organise labor, build dwellings for workmen upon vacant spaces and prison Bites, and appoint a Committee to fix wages. Eight hours' labor was also advocated. Hyndman spoke next. His voice is described as " hoarse and broken with passion." One Fielding spoke next in the same starin. Burns, " a fine, handsome fellow," candidate for Nottingham at the recent general election, was the last speaker. Williams, since committed for trial, does not seem to have spoken on that occasion. He is a milkcarrier by trade, scarcely able to read and write, but a born orator, his style being very much like that of the Rev. Charles Spurgeon.
