Court, Waimate, the other day, a larrikin named Swan, 19 years of age, was fined £2, with the option of seven days’ imprisonment, for having created a disturbance at a public entertainment. The arresting constable said that when the aocused was taken “ he began to cry and plead for msrey ” on account of his mother.

Temuka Linseed Company. The annual meeting of shareholders of the Temuka Linseed, Oil, Cake and Fibre Manufacturing Company was held last night, in the Wallingford Hotel. Mr John Talbot (Chairman of Directors) presided, and about 12 shareholders were present. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, Messrs Hayhurst, Talbot, and R, H. Postlethwaite were re-elected members of Committee, and Mr Rout was re-elected auditor. A full report will appear in our next issue. Ashiuetok Teiefio Beidge.—The Ashburton traffic bridge was officially opened on Tuesday, in the presence of a large number of spectators. The County Chairman, Mr W. C. Walker, congratulated the district upon the completion of so large and important a work, and paid a high compliment to the engineer, contractor, and the clerk of works. The Mayoress, Mr* R. Friedlandor, then declared the bridge formally opened. A number of the leading residents then adjourned to the County Council Office, and a number of toast# were proposed and duly honored. The combined railway and traffic bridge it now closed.

Accidbht to tie Hawia.—-At an hour before high water on Tuesday morning, as the iteamer Hawea wee being taken into Nelson harbor, the pilot’s son being in charge, the vessel failed to answer her helm when in the narrows at the entrance, and with the way on her ehc ran ashore close to the leading lights on Haven Road, running up on the gravel beach. Her bow became hard and fast, and though the Mahinapua, which had just entered port, tried to tow her off, her efforts proved unsuccessful. At high water the same evening the same steamer for over an hour tried to pull her off, and every effort was made, but the Hawea remained in the same place, though she slewsd round a little. The Mahinapua then sailed for the coast. The tide on Tuesday night was a very poor one. The steamer is upright and uninjured.—A telegram to hand last night informs us that the Hawea was floated off safely yesterday morning.

HosktAb awd Chabitabli Aid Boabd. —At a special meeting of the abovs Board on Tuesday erening, after some discussion of the estimates for the ensuing year, it wajs resolved, on the motion of Talbot, seconded bj Mr C. V. Clarke—“ That the estimated amount required for the maimtenancs of charitable aid within the district, £IOOO, together with £3500 for additions to the Timaru Hospital buildings, be adopted, and forwarded to the Government for information and approval; that the contribution on the above amount required from the different contributing bodies, £3500, be allocated pro rate, and the respective amounts so required be notiied to the said contributing bodies as soon as possible.” Regarding the Waimatc Hospital, it was proposed bj Mr J. Talbot, seconded by Mr R.. A. Barker, and earned—“ That the amount required for the maintenance of the Waimate Hospital for the ensuing three months, as based on the estimate furnished by the trustees, be forwarded at once j that the Secretary ascertain from the Government whether the incorporation of the Waimate Hospital, under trustees, vasts the administration of charitable aid in the Waimate district in the said trusto s.” Mr Marehaut submitted the plans for improvements to the hospital, and it was moved by Mr C. Y. Clarke, seconded by Mr J. Talbot, and carried—“ That the amended plans No. 2, prmred by Messrs Moason and Marehaut, for the additions to the Timaru Hospital, be approved of.” The meeting then terminated.
