SC. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

A meeting of this Board was held last Tuesday eveving. Present—His Worship the Mayor of Timaru, Mr J. Jackson (in the chair), and Messrs Clulee, Clarke, Hayes and Barker. Dr Drew (House Surgeon), Mr Thos. Jowsey (Steward), and Mr E. H. Lough (Secretary), were in attendance.

The minutes of last meeting having been confirmed, correspondence was read : From Dr Drew, stating that certain rooms, such as an operating-ioom, outpatients' waitiag-room, nurses' room, were required at the Hospital, and specially drawing attention to the want of; a proper operating room, which want was painfully felt; also asking that a Committee be appointed to enquire into the sanitary condition of the old portion of the hospital, i.e., that used by the staff.—Resolved : "That the Chairman and Messrs Clark, Hayes and Clulee be appointed a Committee to report upon the matter mentioned in Dr Drew's letter."

A telegram was received from the Chairman of the Hospital Board, Diwedin,. that a man from this district named John Driscoll had been admitted to the DunediD Hospital, and his maintenance would be charged to this Board. Mr Sabiston was re-appointed caretaker of the Destitute Persons Home, Timaru, and a claim he made for refund of certain expenditure was referred to the Chairman to make enquiries. In reply to a question, the Chairman stated the old Barracks was used as a Destitute Persons' Home, and that the cost of maintaining destitute children in the district was £l2 4a 2d per month.— Resolved » That the sura of 15s per week be paid for the support of the three children in Mr Sabiston's care; two of Archer's and one of Clark's." The Rev. Mr Hamilton, of Temuka, wrote in reference to a man in Temuka who had been receiving charitable aid. From Messrs N. Dunlop and Co., of Geraldine, tendering for rations—Tender accepted. The Clerk of the Geraldine County Council wrote stating that the sum of £106.48 7d, the Council's share towards charitable aid, had been placed to the Board's credit at the Bank. From the Waimate Borough Council, forwarding cheque of £29 19s Id, their share of the allocation, and asking for a refund of their member's travelling expenses. It was decided to apply to the Government for free railway passes for country members of the Board, and that at the end of every three months the Secretary should enquire from the members the expenses incurred by them, and the amount they require from the Board, and the same be paid if approved of by the Board.

From the Waimate County Council stating that a cheque for £331 8s 9d would be forwarded.

It was resolved to apply to the Old Men's Home, Ashburton, for admission of an old man named Turner, wLo w*B partially paralysed and helpless. A copy of a petition containing 852 signatures, forwarded to the Governor praying that the Waimate Hospital be incoporated as a separate Institution under the Act, was received, and Mr Hayes gave notice that he would more at next meeting that the Board recommend that the petition should be acceded to. It was decided that the Chairman, Secretary, ani Steward should make enquire into all cases of destitution now before the Board, and see if a number cannot be struck off.

Free railway passes to Christchurch were granted to adestitute woman and her family. The new seal of the Hospital Board was adopted on the motion of MrClulee. Authority was giv«n for the Hospital regulations to be printed and posted up at the Hospital gates, Mr Clulee, in reply to a question, said he and Mr Talbot had as yet been unable to draw up their report on the Hospital, but would do so by next meeting. Accounts to the amount of £226 13s 8d ware passed for payment, and the Board adjourned,
