The Hon. Minister of Public Works on Friday visited the Onehunga works now manufacturing iron. The charge against Edward Shaw for misappropriating a cheque was called on again at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, on Friday afternoon, when it was dismissed on the grounds that there was no. specific instructions as to what was to be done with the cheque. The date of the Christchurch regatta has been fixed for February 17th.

Howard has been identified as the man who, wearing goggles and moustache, called at the Hotel at Heathcote Bridge on December 16th, the day when the severed hand was found at Taylor’s Mistake, and told the landlord of the circumstance, He was brought up at the R.M. Court, Christchurch, on Friday and remanded to January 18th.

Beniamin "Rudd, a deferred-payment settler at Flagstaff, was charged at Dunedin on Friday with attempted murder. A man named Waldie and another were ridipg past accused’s place and saluted him as “Uncle Ben.” He threw stones at them, and then rushed away for his gun, which he fired, wounding Waldie in the neck with a bullet. Accused’s solicitor stated that prisoner had been annoyed for some time by people calling him “ Uncle Ben,” and that he only fired the gun with the intention of frightening them. He was committed for .trial. Bail was allowed, himself in £SO and two sureties of £SO each.

The steamer Wairarapa, which left Wellington on Friday night for Sydney, via Auckland and the East Coast, returned to port on Saturday morning, having bent her piston rod. She sailed again on Sunday afternoon. H.M.S. Nelson arrived in Wellington from Auckland between two and three o’clock on Sunday afternoon. Subscription lists in aid of the sufferers by the bush fires at Stratford have been opened at the various newspaper offices at Wellington, and at the Evening Post over £75 was collected up to Sunday. Small amounts have been collected at the Press and Times offices.

A little girl, the daughter of Mr A, Stewart, a farmer at Opoki, was killed on Saturday, She was playing with some other children, and got on a large covered boiler which contained co'd water.
