School Improvement.—We are ylad to note that tenders are invited for the erection of a clsss-room at the Geraldine School, and for repairs to the Orari Bridge School. Both works ought to have been carried out long ago.

A Disappointment.—Much disappointment was experienced in Timaru on Thursday last by the non-arrival of the E.M.S. Struck off the Roll.—The first of the J.P.’s who suffer by the Act passed last session providing for the removal from the roll of the names of those who fail to attend according to the rota is Captain Hume, Inspector of Prisons. Along with Mr D. Anderson, he was warned to attend at Wellington, but neither put in an appearance. A second warning also failed (Captain Hume being at the time absent from Wellington attending to his duties), and the two J.P.’s therefore cease to bold the Commission of the Peace, and are ineligible for reappointment forja year, unless within one month they satisfy his Excellency the Governor that they had a reasonable excuse.

Ten of those who had supplied milk which had not reached the required standard only received 3d per gallon, Complaints were received that the milk did not pass rapidly enough through the refrigerators, and that consequently some persons were delayed very late, Messrs Gray and Austin were deputed to visit the factory on Monday morning, and make arrangements to meet the difficulty. Accounts to the amount of £3B 5s 5d were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.

Thb Necessity foe a Fibibbll, —When the formation of a fire brigade in Geraldine is successfully accomplished, that necessary ad-junct, a fire bell, must not be forgotten. We never remember an occasion when the necessity for one was so clearly demonstrated as at the time of the fire at Geraldine on Thursday night. A well-known resident, with his usual generosity, thought he would do a good turn to the occupants of a certain establishment by knopjfing at their door and calling their attention to the fire. Imagine our generous friend’s consternation when in response to his knock two threatenm g voice? were heard exclaiming, " Who ore you p What do you want t I’ll put a bullet through you 1” And partly suiting their actions to their words the two inmates opened the door and thrust a pair of sixshooters into their visiior’* face. Recognition and explanation, jsre suppose, then saved our friend’s life. His narrow escape from a sanguinary death will now form a valuable addition to his already large stock of original anecdotes with which he is wont to entertain his friepds. Holloway's Pills.— The Great Need.— The blood i» the life, and on its purity depend* our health, if notour exi|'rnco.
