S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday. Present—Mr S. VV. Goldsmith (Chairman), Dr hotter, the Rev. Geo. Barclay, Messrs M. Gray, and G. G. Russell. In hi 3 statement the Chairman said the Board had received the titles for a school site at Rangitira Valley. The Secretary to the Education Department wrote stating that the Scholarship Regulations had been duly sanctioned by the Minister for Education. The Architects reported that they had. prepared drawings and specifications for the new school at Rangitira Valley, and for addition to the Failie Creek School, and for«'a»ded them with their report.

The Fairlie Creek School Committee, wrote stating that they would give £2O to help defray cost of making additions to their school. Resolved—" That tenders be called for the erection of additions to Fairlie Creek school, and also for the erection of a new school at Rangitira Valley, and that on receipt of tenders the Chairman be requested to open and accept ; the letter beiug on condition that the sums set apart for the respective buildings ara sufficient."

The Inspector's general report and reports on the annual examinations at the Timaru Main and Tetnuka Sghools, and on secondary subjects at the Temuka and Waimate Schools were read. It was decided to forward the reports, which are satisfactory, to the Committees of the schools named.

The Rev. Mr Barclay, on behalf of the Building Committee, reported (hat the Committee had met and drawn up a schedule showing that it was proposed to spend £1652 on repairs to school buildings, &c. This would leave a balance of about £750, and the Committee suggested that with this .sum at least two residences should be erected. The Committee reminded the Board that at Waimate, Temuka, Wairnataitai, Sutherlmds, Gapes' Valley, Kakuhu Bush, Upper Waitohi Plat, Belfield, Redclili', and Silveretreum there were no masters' residences. At some of these places masters could easily obtain lodgings, but at others thr-y could not. It was, therefore, a question for the Board to consider where new residences should be erected. Several letters from School Committees were read in reference to master's houses, and, after some discussion, the question was held over for future consideration.

It was resolved that the Inspector and Secretary should audit the several School Committee's accounts as usual.

The Secretary notified that the retiring members of the Board were the Row Geo. Barclay, and Messrs S. W. Goldsmith and Edward Wakefield. Me understood that the last named gentleman .did not intend to seek re-election.
